Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim, vice-president of Afghanistan, was laid to rest on Tuesday with military honors in a special memorial ceremony attended by high-ranking government officials and politicians, after dying of a heart attack on Sunday.

Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf, a candidate for the presidency in the upcoming April elections led a prayer ceremony at the presidential palace and President Hamid Karzai said in a speech that Fahim was devoted to Afghanistan.

SWABI: Awami National Party-Wali (ANP-W) Chairperson Begum Nasim Wali Khan claimed she has made a political comeback in her 70s only to save the philosophy of the late Bacha Khan and Wali Khan.

The widow of ANP leader Khan Abdul Wali Khan was speaking at a ceremony at the Shah Mansoor Judicial Complex in Swabi on Monday. She was accompanied by ANP-W General Secretary Farid Toofan and other office bearers of her party.

Although Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim, President Hamid Karzai's First Vice President had a crucial role on elections and was supporting a particular team, he never announced his support for a particular candidate, Fahim's allies said on Tuesday.

The allies added that Fahim always persuaded Karzai to work on the formation of a national government and claim that Karzai persistently delayed his call.

Marshal Fahim, who was the former commander of the Northern Alliance and Tajik leader from Panjshir, died of a heart attack in his Kabul home on Sunday.

Opposition calls for sanctions on Bahrain regime

The opposition in Bahrain has called for sweeping actions, including sanctions, against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty over its violent suppression of peaceful pro-democracy rallies in the country.

In a statement addressed to the UN Human Rights Council, the opposition called for an end to all arms trade with Manama for killing and cracking down on the Bahraini people.

It has also demanded that Europe put a travel ban on high-profile Bahraini officials, including the sons of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, for torture and other human rights abuses.

The Democratic Party (PD) has opened possibility for its founder and chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhono to be one of the party’s campaigners to boost electability in the April 9 legislative election.

Deputy chairman of the party’s faction at the House of Representatives, Ferrari Romawi, said on Tuesday that the party would have to work around Yudhoyono’s schedule as president

“It is very possible [Yudhoyono will be a campaigner], but it depends on his tight schedule,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.

PDI-P, Golkar set to win most votes: Survey

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Golkar Party would win the most votes in the April 9 legislative election, a recent survey showed.

PDI-P and Golkar have garnered 16.4 percent and 15 percent of the vote, respectively, according to a recent voter survey held by Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC).

“The two parties are closely matched, taking into account the survey has a 2.6 percent margin of error” SMRC director, Djayadi Hanan, said as quoted by tempo.co on Sunday.

Le leader au sein de Nidaa Tounes, Mohsen Marzouk, était l'invité de Midi Show de ce lundi 10 mars 2014.Il est revenu sur les déclarations faites par le gouvernement sur la situation économique délicate par laquelle passe le pays. Il a assuré que le gouvernement actuel doit dévoiler les noms des responsables de cette situation et que la Troïka doit assumer sa responsabilité politique.

Mohsen Marzouk a aussi ajouté qu'il faut beaucoup de courage aux dirigeants de la Troïka pour reconnaître leurs erreurs et assumer leur responsabilité.

 

SPLM-N calls for inclusion of 28 June agreement in Sudan’s new peace roadmap

The Sudan People Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has called on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUSPC) to include the 28 June agreement in a new decision it is preparing to issue on the resolution of armed conflicts in Sudan.

The AUPSC was briefed on Monday by the head of the AU High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), Thabo Mbeki, on his decision to suspend peace talks between the Sudanese government and the SPLM-N, aimed at ending the three-year conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

Political parties must nominate qualified candidates for the legislative election to avoid voter apathy in Indonesia, a lawmaker has said.

Hidayat Nurwahid, the Islamic-based Prosperous Justice Party lawmaker, said legislative candidates must be tested thoroughly and should have a track record that indicates they have the capacity to represent the Indonesian people in both the legislative and executive bodies.

“If parties offer the public a variety of qualified candidates, people will be more inclined to cast their votes,” he said on Sunday afternoon.
