It is time for Afghan women to put an end to the historic deprivations of their rights and play a more significant role in the society, second vice president to Zalmai Rasoul Habiba Sarabi said on Thursday at a gathering for the International Women’s Day. Additionally, the first vice president to Mr. Rasoul Ahmad Zia Masoud called on women to take a stand in defense of their rights.

ECC Reviews Provincial Council Candidates' Education Records

Nine hundred provincial council candidates submitted incomplete educational documents to election officials and 400 do have credentials whatsoever, the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) said Wednesday.

ECC officials reported the figures midway through the public documentation review they began this week to verify provincial council candidates were eligible for the elections.

Qayoum Karzai Steps Down In Favor Of Rassoul

Qayoum Karzai on Thursday officially ended his bid for the presidency and threw his support behind former Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul.

Qayoum Karzai - brother of current Afghan president Hamid Karzai - said that he took the decision after consultations with the representatives of twenty-eight provinces.

He asked the people for preservation of the achievements of the past 12 years and to vote consciously in upcoming election, due to be held in April.

El presidente de Túnez y comandante en jefe de sus fuerzas armadas, Moncef Marzouki, ha comunicado que se levanta la situación de estado de emergencia que se ha vivido en el país desde hace tres años, los 37 meses transcurridos desde el inicio de la primavera árabe. El estado de emergencia fue declarado en Túnez el 15 de enero de 2011, al día siguiente del derrocamiento del anterior presidene, Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, y de que éste dejara precipitadamente el país en un vuelo camino de París. El comunicado oficial se ha conocido hoy pero tiene vigencia desde el día 5 de marzo.

Amid talk of a third, Croat entity in Bosnia, a Bosnian Croat leader has said that another solution would be reorganising the current Federation entity, with its 10 cantons, into three larger units.

Dragan Covic, head of the Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ, the largest Croat party in Bosnia, said that the Federation entity should be reorganised into three units, which he said would strengthen Bosnia and Herzegovina and prevent its disintegration.

KABUL (Pajhwok): The final result of ongoing negotiations between presidential candidates Abdul Qayum Karzai and Zalmai Rassoul to join forces is expected to be announced tomorrow, an aide to the President Karzai’s older brother said on Wednesday.

Dr. Habibi, who campaigns for Qayum, confirmed to Pajhwok the negotiations were ongoing between their leader and Rassoul, a former foreign minister. He said the final decision on making an alliance between the two was expected to be announced on Thursday.

Members of the Somali Parliament of the Federal government of Somalia have welcomed the official decision made by the government on the various rival conferences going on in Baidoa, one of them that have already been concluded.

Mr Macalin Jiis, one of the MP’s commented to Radio Shabelle in Mogadishu that the government is supporting the right path for federalism which in this case is the formation of the 3 region statebeing created in Baidoa.

Addressing his supporters in the eastern province of Takhar on Wednesday, Presidential Candidate Ashraf-Ghani-Ahmadzai discussed the issue of good governance and pledged to ensure the construction of a power generation dam on Kakcha River.

Tension between the Puntland state and Mudug region increased significantly after a political fallout.

This disagreement became officially known after armed gunmen in Galmudug’s southern Galkacyo assailed to kill and injure people from the west of Galkacyo in Puntland.

These gunmen have killed up to 2 people and injured at least another 2 according to a statement to the media by an official named Abdi Kafi who accused the perpetrators of Galmudug.

Dems to announce convention winner in May

The winner of the Democratic Party’s presidential convention would be announced in May, a few weeks after the April 9 legislative election, due to changes in the convention’s itinerary, secretary of the convention’s committee, Lt. Gen. (ret) Suaidi Marasabessy, said on Wednesday.

The committee previously planned to wrap up the convention and announce the results by the end of April. But a new plan was forwarded by the committee to hold an additional one or two public debates after the election, Suaidi said.
