Somalia, Somaliland Sign Agreement in Istanbul

The Somali federal government and Somaliland regional administration concluded their latest round of talks in Istanbul Sunday (January 19th), signing an agreement to hold another meeting in 90 days and to form a secretariat in Istanbul that will oversee the ongoing negotiations.

The agreement outlines the agenda for future talks, including the peaceful resolution of any and all future disagreements through dialogue, according to a communique signed by Somali Minister of Interior and National Security Abdikarim Hussein Guled and Somaliland Foreign Minister Mohamed Bihi Yonis.

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Monday said Afghanistan could hold transparent elections due on April 5 if foreign interference was not allowed in the process.

The president was addressing a meeting attended by Interior Ministry officials and police chiefs from all the 34 provinces at the Presidential Palace, his office said.

Karzai praised Afghan security forces for their sacrifices in the line of duty and defending the country and the people, a statement issued from his office said.

98.1% approves post-June 30 constitution

The Supreme Electoral Committee (SEC) announced Saturday that the newly drafted national charter was approved by 98.1 percent of voters. SEC head Nabil Salib says 38.6 percent (20,613,677) of registered voters cast ballots in last week's referendum on the draft constitution, surpassing the 32% turnout of 2012 constitutional referendum. The number of 'yes' voters according to Salib was 19,985,389. More than 53,485,423 Egyptians were registered to vote in the constitution referendum that took place on 14 and 15 January, according to SEC.

Stanko Primorac, a lawmaker from the Croatian Party of Rights, HSP, on January 16 asked  parliamentarians to vote to dismiss Zivko Budimir, President of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

Primorac submitted the request for the House of Representatives to discuss the dismissal at their next session dedicated to choosing a speaker after Fehim Skaljic recently resigned.

Primorac said he based the demand on Budimir's "violation of the constitution and of the law and bringing the Federation into financial and political collapse”.

Findings of DI Egyptian Referendum Observation Mission

U.S.-based Democracy International (DI) announced today its preliminary findings on Egypt’s recent constitutional referendum held on January 14 and 15. DI deployed more than 80 international observers to 23 of Egypt’s 27 governorates, which made it the largest international observation mission to this referendum. DI’s mission observed all aspects of the referendum process, including the political context in which the referendum took place, the conduct of polling, and the count.

CoE Calls for Reform of Albania’s Judiciary

The Council of Europe's commissioner for human rights, Nils Muiznieks, said corruption in the Albanian judiciary "seriously impedes the proper functioning of the judiciary and undermines public trust in justice and the rule of law in Albania.

“The authorities have to step up their efforts to ensure that all cases of corruption in the judiciary are effectively investigated and prosecuted,” he added.

According to Transparency International, Albania is the most corrupt country in Balkans and one of the most corrupt in Europe.

Bouteflika, de retour en Algérie

Le président Abdelaziz Bouteflika a regagné Alger jeudi en milieu d'après-midi, après avoir subi des contrôles  médicaux à l'hôpital du Val-de-Grâce à Paris, rapporte l’agence officielle APS.

Les examens et contrôles effectués ayant montré "une nette amélioration"  de l'état de santé du président Bouteflika, l'équipe médicale a autorisé le chef de   l'Etat à rentrer en Algérie 24 heures avant le délai prévu, selon la même source.
