Specially authorized courts will be completely abolished before the Parliament’s recess on the eve of the March 30 local elections, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ announced Jan. 29.

The measure will also include the courts authorized by article 10 of the Anti-Terrorism Law, Bozdağ said.

“We will make a historic step that we should have taken a long time ago as a requirement of the rule of law,” Bozdağ told reporters in Ankara.

Special courts had been discontinued by the Parliament in 2012, however a provisionary article allowed courts to finalize pending coup plot cases such as Ergenekon, “Balyoz” (Sledgehammer) Odatv or Poyrazköy.

Bozdağ said that the required draft bill would be submitted to the Parliament in the coming days.

Abolishing the provisionary article and the Anti-Terror courts were included in the proposal of the head of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB), Metin Feyzioğlu, seeking the retrial of coup plot cases. The measure is also expected to “clear the way” for an internal restructuration of the judiciary.
