Jakarta. The government, through the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry, on Tuesday announced that the 2014 legislative election set for next Wednesday would be a public holiday for employees.

“We have reached the decision so that employees across the country can concentrate on the elections without being burdened by work,” said Manpower and Transmigration Ministry secretary general Abdul Wahab Bangkona.

He added that the ministry had also made the announcement in a circular signed by the minister, Muhaimin Iskandar, on March 26, which has been sent out to regional heads across the country to be issued to businesses, workers and others. However, employees who are still required to attend work on the day of the election should coordinate their schedules appropriately, so their duties would not interfere with their right to vote.

“Those who can’t take the day off during the elections are entitled to overtime pay and any other benefits that they would normally receive when working on an official public holiday,” Abdul said. “Should any process of revoting be required in other regions, then the establishment of a public holiday for that day will refer to the General Elections Commission’s regulation.”

The circular on the public holiday on April 9 has also been forwarded to the president, the vice president, the cabinet secretary, the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) and labor unions.

Indonesians will vote for the House of Representatives, Regional Representatives Council (DPD), provincial legislatures, and district and city councils on April 9.
