President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says corruption eradication should be a priority of the new government, which will take shape after this year’s presidential election.

“We are aware there is a lot of work still to be done, like eradicating corruption that continues to occur in this country,” Yudhoyono said in his remarks during the opening of the 2014 National Development Planning Conference (Musrenbangnas) in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said corruption prevention and eradication would be the main responsibilities of the new government in the future.

The President added that six other priorities of the new government included bureaucratic reform, improving electricity infrastructure, improving fiscal management, poverty eradication acceleration, communal conflict prevention and improving elections.

Yudhoyono said he also wished that all parties could accelerate and strengthen development to achieve sustainable economic growth.

He reminded all government officials attending the conference, including ministers, governors, regents and mayors, that they had been given extraordinary mandates from the people.

Yudhoyono also said Indonesians should not be pessimistic and say it was difficult for Indonesia to develop like other countries.

“For those who are optimistic, they believe that Indonesia can be developed and our history has proven that,” he said, adding that development was a long-term activity that often faced complex problems.
