The General Elections Commission (KPU) officially started the 2014 presidential campaign during a declaration at the Bidakarta Hotel in South Jakarta on Tuesday.

"We are declaring a peaceful campaign, run with integrity," KPU commissioner Arief Budiman said, as reported by kompas.com.

The event was attended by presidential candidate Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his running mate Jusuf Kalla, alongside competing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and running mate Hatta Rajasa.

Representatives of the Elections Monitoring Agency (Bawaslu) and the Elections Organizers Ethics Council (DKPP) also attended the event.

Arief said that the KPU had asked for orderly campaigns without dirty tactics.

Both pairs are officially allowed to start the open campaign period from June 4 until July 5, three days before the election on July 9.

Prabowo-Hatta is supported by a Gerindra Party-led coalition, which also includes the Golkar Party, the National Mandate Party PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). The parties collectively secured 292, or 52.14 percent, of the 560 seats at the House of Representatives in the legislative election.

Jokowi-Kalla is backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) in a coalition that involves the NasDem Party, the National Awakening Party (PKB) and the Hanura Party and collectively garnered 207, or 36.96 percent, of House seats.
