Larijani Reelected as Iran's New Parliament Speaker

TEHRAN (FNA)- Members of Iran's parliament on Tuesday reelected Ali Larijani as the speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament).

A total number of 213 lawmakers voted in favor of Larijani's presidency over the ninth parliament for a second year, while his rival Ahmad Bakhshayesh gained 13 votes out of the 252 ballots cast in the voting. Also, 26 legislators abstained voting.

Larijani has headed the parliament during the past five years.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Campaigning for the June 14 presidential election kicked off in Iran early this morning after the Guardian Council released the list of qualified candidates.

Under Iran's Election Law, the Guardian Council, the body responsible for vetting hopefuls, is required to announce the list of approved hopefuls within five days after the end of registration. This period can be extended for another five days if necessary.

Mashaei’s campaign office to ask Guardian Council to revise decision

The election campaign office of Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashaei, who was not approved by Iran’s Guardian Council to run in the upcoming presidential election, says it will pursue the matter through legal channels.

In a statement issued late on Tuesday, the campaign office said that it will use “the full legal capacity of the country" to appeal to the Guardian Council to revise and eliminate possible ambiguities in its decision, IRNA reported.

TEHRAN, May 21 (MNA) – The Guardian Council has qualified 8 candidates for presidential elections, Mashaei and Hashemi Rafsanjani disqualified.

Informed sources communicated the list of qualified candidates to Mehr News.

The same sources had that the following 8 candidates have been qualified for presidential nomination:

1. Saeed Jalili;

2. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf;

3. Gholamali Haddad Adel;

4. Ali Akbar Velayati;

5. Hassan Ruhani;

6. Mohammad Gharazi;

7. Mohsen Rezaei; and

8. Mohammad Reza Aref.

Saudi Arabia arrests more 'Iran spy ring' suspects

Saudi Arabia has arrested 10 more suspects in what it says is a spy ring linked to Iran, state media report.

Those detained include eight Saudis, a Turk, and a Lebanese citizen. Eighteen people were arrested in the same case in March.

Saudi Arabia, which is predominantly Sunni Muslim, has recently repeatedly found itself at odds with Iran, an overwhelmingly Shia Muslim nation.

Iran has denied any involvement in spying in Saudi Arabia.

Minister: Over 66,000 Polling Stations Ready for Iranian Voters

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian voters will go to over 66,000 polling stations inside and outside the country on June 14 to elect their next president, Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar announced on Sunday.

Speaking at the end of a session of the central executive committee of the elections here in Tehran today, Mohammad Najjar said that his ministry is fully prepared to hold the election and has set up 1040 executive committees for the upcoming elections throughout the country.

Iran’s Guardian Council extends deadline for vetting presidential hopefuls

Iran's top electoral supervisory body, the Guardian Council (GC), has extended the deadline for announcing the names of approved hopefuls for the June 14 presidential race.

Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei, the spokesman for the body, said Thursday that the Guardian Council will have until the 21st of May to announce the final list of candidates.

Iran Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Iranian Expatriates Affairs Hassan Qashqavi says Iranian expatriates can cast their ballots for the June 14 presidential election in 120 countries.

Speaking at a meeting with the representatives of electoral executive and monitoring committees outside Iran in Tehran on Monday, he said nearly 300 polling stations have been set up abroad for Iranians to vote overseas.

Iran’s Guardian Council Spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei says the supervisory body has begun the vetting process of hopefuls for the upcoming presidential election.

Kadkhodaei made the comments on Sunday, adding that the council would try to finish vetting the hopefuls in five days’ time.

However, Kadkhodaei added, the supervisory body may need another five days to vet the hopefuls if it cannot finish the job during the initial five-day period.

The Coalition of Three brings together Velayati, former Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel and Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.

Jalili, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, chairman of the Expediency Council, signed up on the final day of the registration for the June 14 vote on Saturday.

The official registration of hopefuls for Iran’s 11th presidential election has entered its fifth and final day, with over 360 individuals having signed up for the race so far.

Reformists rejected as city council candidates

Iranian media report that a large number of reformist candidates have been pronounced ineligible to run in the city council elections.

Mohsen Hashemi, Masoumeh Ebtekar and Parvin Ahmadinejad are among the many well known faces in Iranian politics who were disqualified, according to ILNA.

Mohsen Hashemi said he has not received an official disqualification letter from the Supervisory Committee.

Security groups press reformist candidates to drop out

Reformist candidates in the municipal elections are being threatened against running, an opposition website reports.

The Kaleme website writes that reformist candidates are being summoned by security bodies to be dissuaded from running in the elections.

“While numerous reformists, critics, and progressive former leaders of the country are participating in the city council elections and have officially registered their names, these days they are being contacted and told not to engage in elections activities,” Kaleme writes.

Kuwait emir insult case: 68 face prosecution

Kuwait’s public prosecution is set to investigate a number of people for allegedly undermining the status of the country’s emir.

The 68 men and women have been referred to the prosecution by the state security agency amid suspicions that they helped disseminate a controversial speech given by opposition leader Musallam Al Barrak for which he was sentenced to five years in prison, local Arabic daily Al Jareeda reported on Thursday.

The registration of presidential candidates for the June election in Iran began today, Tuesday May 7, and will continue until Saturday.

Interior Minister Mostafa Najjar announced that the Guardian Council will decide on the eligibility of candidates during five days of deliberation that begin on May 12.

For the first time, the presidential election will take place at the same time as municipal elections.

The registration of hopefuls for Iran’s 11th presidential election, which is due on June 14, has officially begun. The official registration began on Tuesday morning on the order of the Iranian Interior Ministry. Hopefuls have five days, until May 11, to sign up for the presidential election.

More than 20 political figures from across Iran’s political spectrum have so far announced their intention to run for president, with the majority being from the principlist camp.

Head of an Iranian principlist group, Asadollah Badamchian, says the group has finalized a list of 31 hopefuls to take part in the upcoming city and village council elections for the capital, Tehran.

Badamchian said Wednesday that the Followers of Imam and Leadership Front has wrapped up its list and is in talks with another principlist group, the Perseverance Front. 

On April 22, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said 302,165 hopefuls have registered for the fourth council elections.
