Presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Sunday promised to build an inclusive government that would empower each of Afghanistan's ethnic groups.

Speaking to supporters at the Loya Jirga tent in Kabul, Ashraf Ghani's announcement about the ethnic make-up of his would-be administration touched on historically one of the most sensitive issues in Afghan politics. 

Ashraf Ghani himself is Pashtun and his First Vice President, Abdul Rashid Dostum, is Uzbek.

Four Afghan presidential candidates participated in the second televised TOLOnews debate on Tuesday night, exchanging views on the country's security and domestic politics ahead of the April vote.

The candidates went head-to head into testy exchanges during the debate, which touched on security, corruption, women's rights.

The candidates answered questions for nearly two hours from moderator Mujahid Kakar.

Residents of Faryab, Laghman and Helmand, announced their support for candidates in numerous gatherings.

In a gathering in Maimana city of Faryab province, residents announced their support for Presidential Candidate Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai. While announcing their support, the gathering asked all Afghan nationals to participate in the upcoming elections.

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA) on Monday voiced concern over security threats to female provincial council candidates.

FEFA said women poll contenders were facing multiple problems in filing their nomination papers with the electoral body and the issue must be addressed.

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Council for Understanding or Shura-i-Tafahum, aiming to reduce the number of presidential candidates through consensus, on Wednesday acknowledged its failure to bring the hopefuls together for a discussion, despite efforts spanning three months.

Afghan security officials are assuring the public that nearly all the country's polling stations will be safe during April's presidential and provincial elections. 

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said on January 11 that a security assessment done for the upcoming elections showed that safety can be "guaranteed" at 6,431 of Afghanistan's 6,845 polling stations.

Sediqqi said the efforts are already under way to ensure safety at the remaining 414 polling stations.

HERAT CITY (PAN): Female provincial council candidates on Tuesday said they could not travel to districts fearing attacks on them if they plunged into electioneering in western Herat province.

They said women were often attacked in Herat City by militants and unknown gunmen, accusing police of releasing individuals after their arrests on charges of insurgent activities.

KABUL (AFP) – Durante la primera vuelta de la elección presidencial de Afganistán, once candidatos participarán el 5 de abril próximo, anunció este miércoles la Comisión Electoral Independiente (IEC).

“Se ha inscrito a once candidatos en la lista final para las elecciones presidenciales”, anunció Abdul Rahman Hotak, vicepresidente de esta comisión, durante una rueda de prensa en Kabul. En la primera vuelta de la elección presidencial de 2009 habían participado 41 candidatos.

MADRID, 22 (EUROPA PRESS) La Comisión Electoral Independiente (IEC, por sus siglas en inglés) ha rechazado a 16 candidatos que querían participar en las próximas elecciones presidenciales y ha aceptado a otros diez, entre los que figuran Qayoum Karzai, el hermano mayor del presidente afgano, Hamid Karzai, y el exministro Abdul Rahim Wardak, ha informado el diario digital afgano 'Khaama'.
