Electoral commission tapping social media to reach out to youths

AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission (IEC) seeks to educate young voters and encourage their participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections through social media channels, its president said on Thursday.

There are different methods for addressing each segment of society, said IEC Chief Commissioner Khaled Kalaldeh, adding that communication experts see social media outlets, as the best means to reach out to the younger generation nowadays.

AMMAN — President of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Khaled Kalaldeh on Monday accused supporters of the former one-person, one-vote electoral system to be behind rumours targeting the September 20 parliamentary elections.  

The elections must go ahead next month as the Constitution demands that elections be held within four months of the dissolution of the Lower House, a top official said on Monday.

His Majesty King Abdullah dissolved Parliament by decree on May 29, so elections must be held by the end of September.

Islamists ‘ready with inclusive tickets’ as polls approach

AMMAN — The Islamic Action Front (IAF) on Monday said it has completed the lists with partnerships it will run with in the upcoming parliamentary election, and will announce them before the end of this week.

Murad Adaileh, the IAF spokesperson said members of these lists represent different spectra, to include non-Islamists, members of political parties, tribesmen and nominees competing for certain quotas.

Under the 2015 Elections Law, quotas are designated for women, Christians and Jordanians of Circassian/Chechen origins.

New app connects voters to parliamentary candidates

AMMAN — A group of Jordanians, in cooperation with a youth programming company, have launched an app to connect electoral candidates with voters via an interactive, live digital platform.

Through NowabnaJo, voters can ask candidates about their electoral programmes and get answers directly from them, while candidates can share their programmes and visions using multimedia tools such as short videos and live polls.

Islamic Jihad to boycott Palestinian local elections

Islamic Jihad announced on Monday that it would boycott local Palestinian elections scheduled for 8 October, calling instead for national unity.

"We will not participate in the municipal and local elections," the militant group said in a statement.

The movement, which is widely seen as an ally of the Islamist movement Hamas which runs the Gaza Strip, said the elections were not an "appropriate way out of the Palestinian national impasse".

AMMAN — Prospective candidates can register to stand for the September 20 parliamentary elections in the period from August 16 to 18, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said on Tuesday.

Candidates can only stand for election on lists, as running individually is not permitted, said IEC Spokesperson Jihad Momani. 

All candidates on a list must submit their nomination at the same time to sign in the presence of the IEC president and to select one candidate to represent the list to the IEC, Momani said in a statement.

AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday started receiving applications for accreditation for both local and international journalists and observers to monitor the September 20 parliamentary elections, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. IEC Spokesperson Jihad Momani said applications can be submitted online (www.iec.jo).

Seminars aim to increase students’ political awareness ahead of polls

AMMAN — Out of a belief in the ability of young people to effect change, Al Hayat Centre for Civil Society Development is working to raise students’ political awareness ahead of the upcoming elections.

Talal Oleimat, the centre’s programme coordinator, said the “Rased” programme aims to boost political activities by holding discussions at Jordanian universities ahead of the September 20 parliamentary vote.

AMMAN — While the government believes that political parties will gain power and influence by forming coalitions prior to the September 20 parliamentary elections, parties still consider themselves incapable of forming such alliances. 

With the increasing number of licensed political parties, which now number 49, the pros and cons of building coalitions amid a “lack of mature political, economic and social agendas” were the highlight of a conference on Monday that brought the government and parties together.

AMMAN – Tribal and geographical considerations will continue to have a strong influence on Jordanians' voting decisions in the September 20 parliamentary elections, according to experts interviewed by The Jordan Times Sunday. 

The commentators said electing candidates based on their programmes and visions will still need more time to mature in Jordan, particularly in areas outside major cities such as Amman, Irbid and Zarqa.  

EU to send team to observe parliamentary elections

AMMAN — EU Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Matteo Fontana on Wednesday said that the union would send a mission to observe the September 20 parliamentary elections.

The ambassador's announcement came during the signing ceremony on Wednesday of a memorandum of understanding between the EU and the Independent Election Commission (IEC) regarding the nature and the mandate of the mission.

AMMAN — Those who have called to boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections do not believe in democracy as a tool for change, Independent Election Commission (IEC) Chief Commissioner Khaled Kalaldeh said on Tuesday.

Kalaldeh’s remarks followed the launch of a Facebook campaign by a group urging voters to boycott the September 20 elections.

Prime Minister Hani Mulki said that the government is committed to holding transparent elections that reflect the political reform in the Kingdom, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II for years.

AMMAN — Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Tuesday described the 2016 constitutional amendments as “progressive”, aiming at enhancing the principle of separation of powers.

Responding to MPs’ notes on the new constitutional amendments during a Lower House session, Ensour added that banning persons with dual nationalities from holding a parliamentary or ministerial post is something “uncommon in fully fledged democracies”.

AMMAN — The Public Security Department (PSD) on Sunday said that one of its patrols “mistakenly” raided the Islamic Action Front Party (IAF), the “old” Muslim Brotherhood’s political arm in Amman.

In a statement, police dismissed as baseless allegations by Murad Adaileh, the IAF spokesperson, that authorities are targeting the IAF, a legally registered political party.
