Somalia leaders agree to hold delayed elections

Somali leaders announced on Sunday they had struck a deal to wrap up parliamentary elections by February 25, after repeated delays that have threatened the stability of the troubled country.

The agreement was reached after several days of talks hosted by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble with state leaders to try to defuse a bitter political crisis.

El presidente de Somalia, Mohamed Abdulahi Mohamed, ha convocado una cumbre de dirigentes regionales de Somalia para intentar resolver la crisis relativa a las elecciones legislativas y presidenciales. La reunión se celebrará entre el 1 y el 3 de febrero en Samareeb.

"En el marco de nuestros esfuerzos sobre el acuerdo del 17 de septiembre para la celebración de elecciones mantendré un foro de consulta de tres días con los líderes de los estados federales miembros en Samareeb del 1 al 3 de febrero de 2021", ha explicado Mohamed a través de su cuenta en Twitter.

International partners urge resolution of electoral impasse

Somalia’s international partners* are deeply concerned about the continuing impasse in implementing the electoral model agreed on 17 September by President Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo and Federal Member State leaders.

We urge Somalia’s top political stakeholders to demonstrate leadership in the interest of the nation and to quickly resolve outstanding issues of implementation through dialogue and compromise, so that a credible electoral process can proceed as soon as possible.

Opposition had called for electoral reforms before Dec. 1 vote

MOGADISHU, Somalia

Somalia on Tuesday missed a deadline to hold its parliamentary elections on Dec. 1 as agreed by the federal government and six regional states earlier this year.

Opposition leaders had called for reforms, raising concerns regarding the election commission and its capacity to hold a free, fair and credible vote. The last elections were held in 2016.

The Federal Indirect Elections Team has not yet announced a new date for the elections.

It’s calling for term extensions to avoid political conflict.

MOGADISHU, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that Somalia holds peaceful parliamentary and presidential elections in 2020/2021.

Augustine Magnus Kailie, AMISOM police commissioner told members of the civil society, political party representatives and the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) on Friday evening that AMISOM, in partnership with key Somali stakeholders, was ready to secure the upcoming one-person-one-vote elections so that the process is free and fair.

Cinq personnes au moins, dont un vice-ministre du gouvernement somalien, ont été tuées dans une attaque lancée samedi par les insurgés islamistes shebab contre un complexe administratif de la capitale Mogadiscio.

« J’ai vu les cadavres de quatre personnes, l’un d’eux en uniforme de la police », a dit à l’AFP un témoin, Abdulahi Mohamed. Le sénateur Ilyas Ali Hassan a ajouté que le vice-ministre du Travail et des Affaires sociales, Saqar Ibrahim Abdalla, avait également été tué.
