Afghan Ministry of Defense (MoD) reported that the Afghan National Army (ANA) is undertaking a spring operation to ensure security for the presidential election runoff.

The ANA will provide inclusive security for the Afghan people to partake in the possible second round of elections.

“The enemy will increase their attacks in the summer, but this time last year the enemy was more active than they are today,” MoD Spokesman Zahir Azimi said. “The capabilities of the Afghan forces have developed from the experience of the first round of elections.”

The Afghan security forces conducted at least 800 military operations across the country to maintain security for the elections and now insurgent groups are undertaking plans to amplify their terror activities.

“Insurgents have now realized their failure, but are not ready to accept it because they need to keep in mind that the national police are always prepared to maintain security,” Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior (MoI), said on Sunday. “We await the announcement of the electoral bodies of whether there will be a runoff or not so we can announce our security plans.”

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) is preparing for the high possibility of a second round.

“We are trying to conduct the elections if it slips into a second round,” IEC Spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor said.

To determine if a runoff is to take place is left in the hands of the ECC and their final assessments of the registered complaints. The ECC is likely to share the outcomes of the evaluations with the IEC tomorrow making it clear whether there will be a second round or not.
