Political Parties’ Legislative Campaign Funds Total Rp 3.1t: KPU

Jakarta. The 12 political parties that competed in the April 9 legislative election had campaign funds totaling Rp 3.1 trillion ($272 million), according to the nation’s election committee.

The Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) topped the list with the most funds, at Rp 434.9 billion, while the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) had the least, at Rp 52.9 billion, according to the General Elections Committee (KPU).

The KPU set the deadline at 6 p.m. on April 24 for parties to submit their reports on final campaign funding for the legislative election.

Survey highlights uninformed voters

A public opinion poll conducted by the Jakarta-based Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) found that a majority of respondents would like to hear more about the 2014 presidential candidates’ programs before they cast their votes in the presidential election on July 9.

The LSI survey, released on Tuesday and conducted between 15 and 18 April in 33 provinces, found 65.7 percent of 1200 respondents said they wanted to hear presidential candidates talk about their future policies if elected, while only 17.25 percent wanted to know about the possible future coalition. 

Reballoting could compromise vote tallying process

The revote affecting voters in 29 provinces could potentially bring problems to the final tally for the 2014 legislative election at the national level, the General Elections Commission (KPU) has said.

KPU commissioner Arief Budiman said on Tuesday that many polling stations in a number of provinces were yet to hold revotes although the deadline was April 23.

Rizal Djalil, a former National Mandate Party (PAN) lawmaker, was elected new Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) chairman on Tuesday, replacing Hadi Poernomo who was named a graft suspect in a high profile tax fraud case.

“Rizal Djalil was elected democratically. The deputy chairman position is still held by Hasan Bisri. No vote counting was conducted because all meeting participants agreed on his election unanimously,” BPK secretary-general Hendar Ristriawan said after a four-hour session, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Democrats to Nominate Own Presidential Candidate

Jakarta. The ruling Democratic Party will go ahead with its presidential convention to name the party’s presidential candidate, a party official has said.

Jero Wacik, the secretary of the Democrat’s high assembly, said his party would nominate its own presidential candidate and would not put forward the convention winner as a vice presidential candidate for another party, as previously suggested.

Jakarta. A proposed coalition of Islamic political parties should back a presidential candidate who prays five times a day at a mosque and will cut short cabinet meetings to lead his ministers in prayer, an official says.

Almuzzammil Yusuf, a senior member of the Prosperous Justice Party, or PKS, said in Jakarta on Monday that a high level of piety should be a “minimal requirement” for any candidate running for the highest office in the Muslim-majority nation.

Suryadharma Ali temporarily dismissed from PPP

The United Development Party’s (PPP) national leaders meeting (Rapimnas), which concluded early on Sunday, resulted in the decision to temporarily dismiss Suryadharma Ali from his position as the party’s chairman.

It was said Suryadharma’s dismissal was because he refused to attend the meeting, which was initiated by secretary-general Muchammad Romahurmuziy and attended by more than half of the party’s executives.

Jakarta. The April 9 legislative election has brought two surprising results.

First, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which was predicted to garner a large number of votes with the help of the widely popular Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo as its presidential candidate, only garnered around 19 percent — far below its target of 27 percent.

The second surprise came in the form of five Islamic parties, which analysts had written off as small contenders, performing much better than expected.

Registration for Presidential Candidates to Open May 18

Jakarta. The window for registrations for Indonesia’s presidential election in July will open next month, the national polling body announced on Tuesday.

Ferry Kurnia, a member of the General Elections Commission, or KPU, said in Jakarta that the registration period would run from May 18 to 20.

After the registration, the KPU will conduct a verification and administrative check on the documents submitted by the applicants, which should take around days to complete, Ferry said.

KPU will also carry out health check on the candidates.

JAKARTA: A week after the legislative elections in Indonesia, political parties are working hard to form coalitions to better their chances at the July 9 presidential elections.

Indonesia's top three political parties in this general election -- PDI-P, Golkar and Gerindra -- have become coalition focal points.

PAN worries about repeat elections

The National Mandate Party (PAN), one of the 12 political parties participating in the legislative election, said that repeat elections in a number of areas across the country could potentially affect the party’s votes.

Legal affairs and advocacy head of PAN Didi Suriyanto said that public enthusiasm would be lower than on the legislative election day.

“The voters’ spirit will not be the same as on April 9 [the original election day],” he said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

PKB offers to fill VP role on PDI-P ticket

The National Awakening Party (PKB) has offered to form an alliance with the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) by putting forward a candidate to fill the vice presidential position, an offer it said was reasonable due to the PKB’s good performance in the recent legislative election.

“It’s reasonable for us as a party with a high number of votes to offer a vice presidential candidate. We’ve proposed this to the PDI-P,” said the head of the PKB’s central executive board Marwan Jafar on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

Jakarta. Prospects for much-needed reforms in Southeast Asia’s top economy are in doubt after a worse-than-expected election performance by the main opposition left Indonesia staring at an unwieldy coalition government, analysts warn.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) won around 19 percent of the vote at Wednesday’s elections, according to initial results, putting it in first place but with less than the 25-30 percent expected.
