The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is considering inviting the Hanura Party to join a coalition it has formed with two other parties – the NasDem Party and the National Awakening Party (PKB) – ahead of the upcoming presidential race.

PDI-P deputy secretary general Ahmad Basarah said his party had kept the option for a coalition with Hanura ‘on the table’ due to their mutual cooperation platform.

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) deputy secretary-general, Ahmad Basarah, said party presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s running mate would be announced Friday.

“It will be announced on May 16. So, let’s just wait,” said Basarah in a discussion in Jakarta on Monday as quoted by kompas.com. He refused to give further details.

The United Development Party (PPP) will form a coalition with the Gerindra Party to nominate the latter’s chief patron Prabowo Subianto as its presidential candidate, a decision reached in the party’s second national leaders meeting (Rapimnas) that ended on Monday.

“Finally, at 2 a.m. on May 12, the second Rapimnas PPP agreed to support Prabowo Subianto as its presidential candidate,” said PPP chairman Suryadharma Ali after the meeting’s closing ceremony in Jakarta early on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

Makassar. The National Awakening Party (PKB) held a press conference on Saturday night to announce its support for Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and its presidential hopeful, Joko Widodo.

The PKB will join the National Democratic Party in Joko’s PDI-P-led coalition.

The support was declared in a press conference in Aryaduta hotel in Makassar, South Sulawesi on Saturday night. PKB chairman Muhaimin Iskandar was represented by the party’s central executive board (DPP) chief Marwan Jafar.

The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) will deploy around 35,000 soldiers to assist the National Police before and during the July 9 presidential election.

"The Army will help the police maintain security during the presidential election. We have prepared our territorial forces from Babinsa to Koramil, Kodim, Korem and even Kodam," Army chief of staff Gen. Budiman said in Magelang, Central Java on Friday, as reported by kompas.com.

The Home Ministry has started drafting a government regulation in-lieu-of law (Perppu) to improve the quality of this year’s presidential election, scheduled to be held on July 9. 

General Elections Commission (KPU) chairman Husni Kamil Manik said on Thursday that the ministry had summoned the commission’s secretariat-general to discuss the regulation.

Jakarta. The National Awakening Party (PKB) has announced its support for Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo’s bid for the presidency and will join a coalition with Joko’s party in the legislature.

“The PKB’s central board decided to support Joko Widodo in a plenary meeting which was held last night,” said Lukman Edy, deputy chairman of the PKB, as quoted by the state-run Antara news agency on Friday.

The Hanura Party remains undecided on whether it will form part of any coalition in the July 9 presidential election after the party’s national executive meeting failed to reach a consensus on which presidential candidate it will support.

The meeting gave the authority to party chairman Wiranto to decide which coalition the party would join.

Hanura executive Saleh Husin said party executives thought it was too early to make any decision regarding the formation of a coalition.
