KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysians must ensure the Barisan Nasional (BN) is returned to power with a more than a two-thirds majority in parliament in Sunday's general election to enable the government to be in a strong position to govern the nation, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

The former prime minister said BN needed a resounding victory to facilitate coalition to implement all the policies that have been planned for the people's well-being and the nation's prosperity.

Referring to the 2008 general election in which BN lost its two-thirds majority, he said, the situation to a certain extent made it difficult for the BN government to implement policies that have been planned.

"Since the government is not at a strong position, it has to accede to demands from opponents of government policies," he said when replying to a question from the floor at the launch of a book, a compilation of part of his articles posted on his blog chedet.com between 2008 and 2012.

Dr Mahathir urged the people, particularly youths, to support BN, the party that had contributed immensely to the nation, in this election.

"I hope the electorate will support the party that has served you, your parents and the country," he said.

Dr Mahathir said Malaysia could attain advanced nation status in 2020 as the present government was implementing various projects and programmes to realise Vision 2020 to transform Malaysia into a developed country.

"Present leaders are still talking about Vision 2020 and are making serious efforts to realise the vision, this is among the indicators that we are on the right track.

"But surely there will be approaches that may differ slightly than what is expected, nevertheless I believe Malaysia can still achieve Vision 2020 in 2020," he added.

The ambitious Vision 2020 is Dr Mahathir's brainchild. He served the nation as the prime minister for 22 years.

The 364-page bilingual book jointly published by Berita Publishing Sdn Bhd and MPH Group Publishing is available in all the bookstores in the country.

It costs RM25 a copy.
