Sungai Limau may see a battle between an architect and an ustaz as Barisan Nasional devises an out-of-the box strategy to wrest control of the state seat from PAS.

Barisan will likely give architect Datuk Fadzillah Mohd Ali a second chance to win the seat, while PAS will possibly opt for fresh face Azam Samad, who is Jerai PAS Youth chief.

Both Barisan and PAS will name their candidates today for the Nov 4 by-election.

The Sungai Limau seat fell vacant following the death of Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak last month. Azizan is regarded as the “legend” of Sungai Limau, successfully defending the seat for five consecutive terms since 1995.

Fadzillah and Azizan are cousins while Azam is said to be a “political disciple” of Azizan.

In the May general election, Fadzillah lost by 2,774 votes, clinching 10,520 votes against Azizan’s 13,294. Although the cousins battled it out in the political arena, they remained close to each other.

Other candidates short-listed by Barisan are Datuk Muhammad Suhaimi Abdullah and Datuk Ikmal Ismail.

However, Suhaimi could be dropped following his failure to defend the Jerai Umno division chief’s post from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom.

Local leaders said Ikmal, who is an aide to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, was less likely to be picked as he is from the neighbouring Guar Chempedak constituency.

“It is better to field a local candidate who is familiar with the constituents here,” said a party insider.

PAS’ other potential candidates are Jerai secretary Muzaini Azizan, Sungai Limau Youth chief Mohd Muaz Othman. Mohd Muaz is also a founder of a religious school in Bukit Besar.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had said that they would field a fresh face endorsed by the Pakatan Rakyat leadership.
