While declaring he was not opposed to any contest for position in the upcoming March party election, PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic)  today said the “spirit of friendship” had to be maintained.

Anwar said PKR was open towards the contesting of any position within the party and all candidates should follow the guidelines, which had already been drawn up.

"There should not be any internal bickering or bitter infighting as any competition should be in the spirit of friendship and the reformation agenda," Anwar said commenting on Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's intention to contest the deputy PKR president position.

In announcing his intention to contest the deputy PKR president position on Friday, Khalid said it was a responsibility to repair the foundations of the party which he described as having weaknesses.

Current PKR deputy president Azmin Ali is expected to face strong competition from Khalid and speculation is rife about who Anwar will support.

On Friday, Khalid had announced that he would be contesting for the number two position in PKR, currently held by Azmin.

"Anwar has complimented me for being a good administrator and party leader," Khalid had been reported as saying.

Khalid said he would begin to prepare for the contest after the Kajang by-election on March 23.

He believed that he has the upper hand due to his convincing track record, describing himself as honest and dedicated.

The PKR election is scheduled to begin on April 25 and end on May 11.

The nomination of candidates at the federal level will be held on March 29.

At division level, it will be held according to zones between April 4 and 13.
