TELUK INTAN, May 27 (Bernama) -- Gerakan Tuesday dismissed as untrue an opposition claim that Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong will be appointed a senator if he loses the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election, polling for which is on Saturday.

Deputy president Dr Cheah Soon Hai explained that the party, at a central committee meeting several months ago, proposed the name of another individual for the senator's post.

"Mah declined the offer to be proposed (as a senator); so the question of Mah being appointed a senator does not arise," he told reporters here.

Cheah was asked to comment on the DAP's claim that the constituents of Teluk Intan would not lose out because the defeated BN candidate could be appointed a senator.

Meanwhile, Mah repeated that he would not want to be appointed a senator and that two other names had been proposed for the post.

"As the president, again I want to say that if I lose I will not be a senator. There will be no backdoor entry for me. I don't want (to be a senator); I have already said, I don't want," he said.

Mah said he wanted to be the MP for Teluk Intan to enable him to help the constituents.

"I want to be the MP because I feel I can do a lot to help the people of Teluk Intan.

"I want to establish a fund to help the poor, single mothers and the disabled. That's my hope for the people of Teluk Intan," he said.
