Golkar Party politician and former social affairs minister Idrus Marham has been sentenced to three years in prison for accepting bribes from a businessman to finance his failed bid to become a party leader.

“The defendant has been proven guilty of committing corruption,” presiding judge Yanto said as quoted by kompas.com at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday.

Idrus asked the judges to wait for one week as he considered whether he would appeal the ruling.

“I will use the time provided by the law to consider my next move. Everything stays in the proper legal avenue,” he said.

Idrus' lawyer, Syamsul Huda, said his client would discuss with his legal team whether he would like to appeal the verdict.

The court found Idrus guilty of receiving Rp 2.25 billion (US$159,688) worth of bribes from businessman Johannes Budisutrisno Kotjo.

The sentence was lighter than what was proposed by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), which demanded that Idrus be sentenced to five years in prison.
