The Deputy President of the General National Congress (GNC), Juma Ateega, has today resigned.

In a letter addressed to new GNC President, Nuri Abu Sahmain, Ateega said he was resigning for “personal, subjective and health reasons.”

Ateega stood as an individual candidate from Misrata in the elections for the GNC last July, attracting 15,402 votes. He was elected GNC Deputy on 10 August 2012.

Following the resignation of Congress President Mohamed Margarief on 28 May this year, Ateega became acting head of the GNC, a role he held until 25 June.

In the letter, published on the GNC website, Ateega said his decision was final. He said he wished success to the work of the GNC.
