The General Elections Commission (KPU) is allowing political parties to accept donations from legislative candidates or other third parties until April 5—marking the end of the campaign period— says KPU commissioner Hadar Nafis Gumay.

“Even though the deadline for submitting initial campaign budget reports is over, parties may still accept donations because financial transactions could still be carried out for campaign expenditures,” Hadar said in Jakarta on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Donations from legislative candidates, individuals, companies or state-owned enterprises (BUMN) could still be accepted until campaign activities came into an end, Hadar said.

However, transactions related to campaign activities must stop at least 14 days after election day—April 9, he added.

“Starting April 22, no donations should be accepted from anyone and anywhere. Political parties should submit [their] campaign fund transactions to the KPU as final reports,” Hadar said.

Meanwhile, the commission’s legal bureau head, Nur Syarifah, said that parties should submit their final reports on April 24.

“Political parties should close their books by April 17, meaning that they should not receive any donations. They then should tidy up their financial records and submit them to the KPU on April 24, at the latest,” she said.
