The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is considering inviting the Hanura Party to join a coalition it has formed with two other parties – the NasDem Party and the National Awakening Party (PKB) – ahead of the upcoming presidential race.

PDI-P deputy secretary general Ahmad Basarah said his party had kept the option for a coalition with Hanura ‘on the table’ due to their mutual cooperation platform.

“Hanura should remember that the PDI-P does not want to engage in any power sharing, however. They should have common views with us,” he said on Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Basarah said both NasDem and the PKB had committed to putting aside transactional politics and had agreed to put forward shared visions and missions.

He did not deny, however, that the two parties’ senior members could be appointed as ministers.

Recently, Hanura chairman Wiranto and PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri sat on the same table during a ceremony to award an intelligence professorship to former National Intelligence Agency chief Gen. (ret) Hendropriyono.

The meeting of the two leaders has led to intensive communications between their parties’ executives.

In the event that Hanura failed to join with the coalition due to differing views over power sharing, Basarah asserted that the PDI-P still had enough votes to nominate its own presidential candidate.

“Theoretically, the PDI-P, together with NasDem and the PKB, has secured the minimum 20 percent of House seats and 25 percent of national votes. It’s enough to nominate Jokowi [Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo] as our presidential candidate,” said Basarah.
