Prolific writer Goenawan Mohamad has resigned his membership of the National Mandate Party (PAN), since it declared its official support for the Gerindra Party's presidential candidate, Prabowo Subianto.
Goenawan said he was very disappointed with the party’s decision. He further said PAN had veered from its original objective as a party and had become a political opportunist during the 2014 general election.
“What it is fighting for is just how to ensure that its party chairman can become vice president,” Goenawan, who is also one of the party’s founders, said in his resignation statement on Thursday as quoted bytribunnews.com.
Goenawan said he and several friends had established PAN at the start of the Reform era to help improve the quality and spirit of the Indonesian political party system, which had been destroyed by the New Order regime.
PAN, he said, was established as a continuation of the pro-democracy movements against the authoritarian regime.
“All this time, despite my disappointments, I have remained a PAN member and regularly paid my membership fee. But this time, I have no more hope. I hereby declare that I quit my party membership,” Goenawan asserted.
