The General Elections Commission (KPU) has approved a proposal for 10 extra seats in the West Sumatra Provincial Legislative Body (DPRD) to 65 in the 2014 legislative election.

The rise in the number of seats is in line with the increasing number of constituents as a result of population growth.

The approval is contained in the commission`s decision number 95/Kpts/KPU/2013 on designation of legislative election zones and allocations of seats for the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Legislative Bodies (DPRD), the head of the commission`s chapter in West Sumatra for legal, technical and public relations affairs, Agus Catur Rianto, said here on Saturday.

The provincial legislative body now has 55 members elected in the 2009 legislative election. They will end their term of office in 2014.

The rise in the number of seats is in line with the increasing number of constituents as a result of population growth, he said.

According to the aggregate subdistrict population list (DAK2) aubmitted by the West Sumatra governor to the provincial election commission on December 6 last year, West Sumatra`s population rose to 6,617,977 in 2012 from 4,506,628 in 2009.

Consequently, the number of seats in the legislative body must be increased to 65 in the 2014 election.
