PETALING JAYA: PKR members have congregated outside the party's headquarters here on Tuesday night, protesting the manner in which party polls have been conducted.

The protesters appear to be part of the pro-Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim faction, and are holding placards with anti-Azmin Ali sentiment.

Signs put up also call for disciplinary action to be taken against the deputy president Azmin, Secretary General Datuk Saifuddin Nasution, and Datuk Dr Tan Kee Keong.

PKR leaders were believed to be conducted a high-level political bureau meeting within the HQ.

TELUK INTAN: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has described the straight fight for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat on May 31 between Barisan Nasional and DAP as a “50-50 battle”.

Speaking to reporters after nomination for the by-election ended yesterday, Muhyiddin said the two-week campaign period would decide the outcome.

Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong will square off against DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, the political secretary of Gelang Patah MP and party adviser Lim Kit Siang, in the by-election on May 31.

PETALING JAYA: Incumbent PKR deputy president Azmin Ali looks set to retain the post as he widened his lead with 12,250 votes, leaving behind his close rival Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim with more than 4,000 vote margin.

In an official result released by PKR on Monday night, the Selangor mentri besar garnered 8,123 votes followed by outgoing secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail with 6,997 votes.

GEORGE TOWN: The allegation by a Bukit Gelugor by-election independent candidate that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had secretly expressed his support for PAS’ hudud in Kelantan is a lie.

Lim’s political secretary Wong Hon Wai in a statement on Monday said that the Chief Minister has never supported PAS’ Private Members Bill to implement its brand of hudud in his capacity as DAP secretary-general.

“Lim has also said that hudud will never be implemented in Penang.

TELUK INTAN: It will be a straight fight between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat for the  parliamentary seat by-election here.

Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong will face off against DAP's Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, the political secretary of Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang in the by-election, which will be held on Saturday. 

 

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had rated the fight to be a 50-50 battle.

TELUK INTAN: There is an obvious swing of support from the Chinese community to Barisan Nasional in the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat by-election, said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic).

He said many people, including those from the business community had told him that only Barisan could bring development to the constituency.

Apart from that, Liow said the community had also started to realise that the DAP had betrayed them after last year’s general election.

PETALING JAYA: The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will cooperate with other Indian-based political parties to get Indian voters in the Teluk Intan constituency to come out and vote in the by-election on March 31.

Its president Datuk M. Kayveas said the PPP election machinery would be focusing on the Indian community in the India by-election campaign.

“We see that the majority of the Indian voters, numbering more than 11,000 in Teluk Intan, live in the estates.

The Umno youth chief said Mah’s extensive experience as the constituency’s two-term former member of parliament and also former deputy minister would help to regain the voters’ support and confidence for Barisan.

KUCHING: Sarawak Barisan Nasional leaders will let Teras, SPDP and SUPP “fight it out” at the next state elections, claims a Universiti Malaysia Sarawak political scientist.

“It’s likely the incumbents from Teras will be up against candidates from SUPP and SPDP in the disputed seats. The loser will be marginalized and left out of Barisan eventually,” said Dr Faisal S Hazis, who heads the Political and International Affairs Department at the Social Sciences Faculty.

IPOH: Barisan Nasional has named Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong (pix) as the candidate for the Teluk Intan by-election on May 31.

The announcement was made by Barisan deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Saturday.

Muhyiddin said Mah, 53, had the experience and track record to serve the people well when given the chance.

He said Mah was a two-term Teluk Intan MP before he lost in the last two general elections.

TELUK INTAN: Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud (pic)has been named the DAP candidate for the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election.

 

Dyana Sofya, 27, political-secretary to Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang, was unveiled by party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng at the opening of the party's by-election operations centre here on Saturday.

Seated between Guan Eng and acting party chairman Tan Kok Wai, the Ipoh-born Dyana appeared calm and composed as she met with other Pakatan Rakyat leaders.

Hold back support for PAS until it drops hudud plan, says DAP man

JOHOR BARU: A DAP member has asked non-Muslims, particularly the Chinese, to hold back their support for PAS until the party withdraws unconditionally its plans of tabling any Private Members Bill to implement its brand of hudud.

Norman Fernandez urged the Chinese to send a loud and clear message to PAS that the Chinese would not vote for the party as long as it did not subscribe to the Common Manifesto Platform, which makes no mention of hudud.

PAS, he said, must realise that there was real danger that it could lose all of its four state seats in Johor.

PKR polls: Manikavasagam claims he hasn’t been informed of suspension

SHAH ALAM: PKR’s S. Manikavasagam (pic) says he is unsure if he has been suspended by the party as he has yet to be formally informed.

The former Kapar MP, who is contesting against Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim for the post of Kuala Selangor PKR division chief, claimed that he only received an SMS from a colleague on Thursday stating that he had been dropped and would not be allowed to contest in the ongoing party polls.

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) is in no hurry to decide on a bid by two former opposition assemblymen to join the state Barisan Nasional component.

Party secretary-general Datuk Johnson Tee said they would respect the sensitivities of other Sabah Barisan parties before making a decision on the applications of Matung­gong’s Jeremy Malajad and his Luyang counterpart Hiew King Chew.

He added that PBRS received the applications about two months ago.

Tee said the earliest any decision could be made by the party was next month.

KUCHING: Infighting in two Barisan Nasional component parties of SPDP and SUPP has boiled over with the majority of their elected representatives quitting and uniting under a new party - Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras).

Resigning from SPDP is its president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom and the senior most leader from SUPP is Sibu Chief Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

Both Mawan and Wong are state ministers.

The new party claims to have 11 assemblyman and MPs, thus making it the second largest party among Sarawak Barisan component after Parti Persaka Bumiputera Bersatu.

Tiong King Sing takes over as acting SPDP chief after Mawan's shock resignation

MIRI: Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is the new acting president of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) taking over the post late Thursday afternoon.

Tiong, who is Bintulu MP, automatically assumes the acting president post following the sudden announcement by party president Tan Sri William Mawan that he (Mawan) had quit the SPDP to join newly-registered party TERAS.

Tiong assumes the acting president post by virtue of the fact that he was Deputy President during Mawan's tenure and is the second man in line for the top post, said SPDP Youth Chief Robert Ayu.

Terengganu crisis: Ahmad Said expected to return to Umno

PUTRAJAYA: Former Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said is expected to retract his resignation from Umno, said his successor Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

Ahmad Razif said this is in a press conference after meeting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the latter's office here, Wednesday.

“Insyallah, it will be status quo and we will maintain our 17 representatives (in the state assembly),” he said.

The political situation in the state was earlier feared critical following a series of resignations led by Kijal assemblyman Ahmad on Monday.

Ex-Terengganu Mentri Besar Ahmad Said quits Umno

KUALA TERENGGANU: Datuk Seri Ahmad Said (pic) quit Umno hours after he was replaced by Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman as Terengganu Mentri Besar late Monday.

Ahmad, who is Kijal assemblyman, was joined by Umno's Ajil assemblyman Ghazali Taib in quitting the party to become independent assemblymen.

This is confirmed to The Star by an aide of Ahmad.

The aide said that Ahmad would hold a press conference on Tuesday.

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu PAS is holding an emergency meeting over the state's "political crisis" and has urged party members to remain calm.

State commissioner Satiful Bahri Mamat said the party's state leadership would take the best possible decision to resolve the crisis.

"We will make appropriate announcements from time to time through the official media, to avoid any rumours and statements that are not the decision of PAS leadership," he said in a statement Tuesday.
