Information Minister highlights gov’t progress on 4th month in office

Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu on Saturday morning, the Minister of Information for the Somali Federal Government highlighted the progress and advancement the government has made since January 2014.

Mustaf Sheikh Ali, the Information Minister, emphasized that the government has taken effective steps and actions to improve the security conditions in Mogadishu and other parts of the country.

New commissioner of Howlwadaag appointed

A handover ceremony was held last in Mogadishu in which the district commissioner of Howlwadaag was replaced. After a decree from the Governor of Benadir & Mayor of Mogadishu, Mohamed Abukar Jacfar was stranded of his title.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Howlwadaag district centre, Mr. Jacfar claimed that during his time as commissioner, he enforced tough security measures in the district.

Parliamentary Finance Committee to investigate gov’t corruption scandals

Abdi Barre Yusuf, a parliamentarian of the Somali Federal Government who is among legislators in the Finance Committee, reported to Shabelle on the recent corruption claims involving the Ministry of Finance.

The Member of Parliament confirmed that he has received incriminating evidence that the State Minister of Foreign Affairs ordered the compensation of $300,000 USD to a company that imported thousands of kilograms of sugar from abroad at Mogadishu seaport.

MP Dalha calls on gov’t to investigate corruption scandal

Mohamed Omar Dalha, a Member of Parliament reported to Shabelle that he is calling on the Somali Federal Government to investigate the latest of claims of corruption among the government involving the Ministry of Finance.

Mr. Dalha said that the responsibility of the parliamentary finance committee is to monitor and track mass money withdrawals and verify that the sums are being used for official reasons only, to avoid corruption among politicians and other officials.

Parliamentarians temporarily postpone motion against Interior Minister

Somali Members of Parliament (MPs) as usual, convened today for their daily session at the National Assembly in Mogadishu. Mahad Abdalla Awad, the second deputy parliament speaker announced that the motion against the Interior Minister will be delayed until further notice.

In yesterday’s sitting, over 65 MPs brought forward a motion to the second deputy speaker of parliament requesting that lawmakers hold a vote of confidence for the Minister of Interior & Federalism, Abdullahi Godax Barre.

Over 65 Members of Parliament yesterday submitted a motion against the Minister of Interior & Federalism Abdullahi Godax Barre, who in their opinion has breached several articles in the provisional constitution.

The legislators requested from the Speaker of parliament whether parliament can review whether Mr. Barre is suitable enough to continue as Interior Minister after lawmakers accuse him of appointing district and regional administration without the consent of local residents.

Peace & Democracy party chairman calls on elders to stay away from politics

The chairman of the Peace & Democratic political party Abdullahi Sheikh Hassan said that the traditional clan elders and intellectuals that are protesting the motion against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to not being ousted in a vote of confidence, should steer well clear from politics as political affairs or disputes should be resolved by Members of Parliament.

Mr. Hassan added that the motion was prepared by the Somali legislators in parliament and that they alone get the final say on whether the President will face a vote of confidence or not.

The Minister of Interior & Federalism Abdullahi Godax Barre was recently summoned by Somali lawmakers to the National Assembly building in Mogadishu to answer a few questions regarding the formation of district and regional administrations for areas liberated from Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

In today’s session, over 65 Members of Parliament (MPs) have brought forward a motion to have a vote of confidence against Abdullahi Godah Barre, the Minister of Interior & Federalism. The second Deputy Speaker was chairing the session with 128 legislators in attendance.

Marka district commissioner strands Shalanbod commissioner of his title

The district commissioner of Marka in the Lower Shabelle region Mohamed Ali Yarisow, has reported to Shabelle that he has declared a new commissioner for the Shalanbood town after stranding the current one of his title.

Mr. Yarisow has said that Shalanbod town falls under the Marka district and for that reason, he has power to name a new commissioner.

Furthermore, the commissioner of Shalanbod Nur Osman said that the government gave him the title and that only they have the power to replace him.

Minister of Nat. Securits calls on legislators to give the President a ‘chance’

The Minister of National Security Abdikarim Hussein Guled, spoke to the BBC Somali Service in the UK and called on Somali legislators to give the President one more chance to prove himself.

Mr. Guled said that calling on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to resign needs to be done according to the constitution as he (the President) is the senior politician of state.

“I am asking the Somali Parliament to allow the government to change tactics as it only has a little time left and that the lawmakers stop creating tension.” Said the Minister of National Security.

 

Prime Minister denies he met with certain clans in Lower Shabelle

The Prime Minister of the Somali Federal Republic Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, has pledged that his government is committed in supporting the citizens in Lower Shabelle to stop all Al-Shabaab movements in the region, he said after a short trip to Marka and Qoryole.

Mr. Ahmed also added that the co-allied Somali National Army and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) will flush out the terrorist insurgents from strategic strongholds in Lower Shabelle region including Barawe.

Civil society convene in Mogadishu and call on the President to resign

A meeting was held today in Mogadishu in which legislators, clan elders, intellectuals and peace-builders participated in. Members of the society welcomed the motion against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud calling on him to tender his resignation.

Nur Bocor Jeelle, the chairman of the House of Hawiye said at the meeting that the President failed in his leadership and in that case he should resign as soon as possible.

More than 130 Somali legislators from the Somali Federal Parliament are preparing a motion against the President of the Somali Federal Republic Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to be brought up for debate in today’s parliamentary session in Mogadishu.

Days ago, a third of the National Assembly called on the President to resign in a strongly worded letter, informing him that they will have a vote of confidence if he does not wish to tender his resignation.

The President of the Somali Federal Republic and the Speaker of Parliament has accepted a motion to be passed among legislators in which they will have a vote of confidence.

Somali legislator Ahmed Mayow Abdullahi ‘Ruush’, reported to Shabelle that 40 Members of Parliament representing 115 others have sent the letter requesting the President to resign and that both of them accepted.

The lawmaker said that the President failed in implementing the ‘6 pillars’ he used in his campaign when he was elected for President.

All Somalis have the right to express their political views, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Wednesday (May 7th), responding to lawmakers' calls for his resignation.

"I respect the views of every Somali, whether a politician or a civilian," Mohamud told reporters at Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport upon his return from an official visit to the United Arab Emirates according to Radio Mogadishu. "Let the views be expressed at a proper place. I will welcome everyone who has an opinion that will help us build Somalia."

In today’s parliamentary session, the Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament has allowed for a motion against President Hassan Sheikh to pass and for legislators to call on his resignation.

The Speaker Mohamed Sheikh Osman ‘Jawari’, was presented with a letter in which stated that around 130 Members of Parliament have decided to call on the President to tender his resignation or that they will have a vote of confidence.
