Special courts abolished as Turkish President Gül signs law

President Abdullah Gül approved a law March 6 abolishing the notorious specially authorized courts (ÖYM).

The ÖYMs were discontinued by Parliament in 2012, but a provisionary article allowed courts to finalize pending coup plot cases, such as: Ergenekon, “Balyoz” (Sledgehammer), OdaTV and Poyrazköy. From now on, the eight ÖYMs that convicted soldiers in mass trials in 2012 and 2013 will be abolished and their case files will be passed on to regular criminal courts.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan referred to himself as the “marathon man” in a rally on March 6, responding to opposition vows that his ambition to become president would be in vain. 

Speaking during a rally in the Eastern Anatolian province of Elazığ, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) leader said the presidential race was not currently his main agenda, but added that he would consider it after the March 30 local elections.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader has called on citizens to punish the thieves at the upcoming local elections, continuing to press the government over corruption allegations. 

“I am addressing my citizens who voted for the AKP, of which the country’s prime minister calls his son, asks him to set the money to ‘zero’ at home? Does your conscience accept this?” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said during an election rally March 2 in the Thracian province of Edirne. 

Turkish main opposition takes judicial bill to Constitutional Court

Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) applied to the top court for the annulment of a controversial judicial bill, hours after it was approved by President Abdullah Gül.  CHP made its application on the grounds that the bill was unconstitutional. 

Last week, CHP has filed an application to the Constitutional Court demanding that a law restructuring Turkey’s top judicial institution be declared null and void, but its demand was rejected since the bill was not approved by the president.

A controversial law approved by Parliament over the weekend turns the justice minister into a “Chief Qadi” for the country, as the law empowers him with extraordinary authority, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has suggested. 

Speaking at a press conference at Parliament on Feb. 17, CHP Deputy Chair Faruk Loğoğlu said the law’s eventual aim was to “transform the state into a Sultanate.”

Turkey's parliament approved a law giving the government more control over the appointment of judges and prosecutors on Saturday, after heated debate and a brawl in which an opposition member of parliament was hospitalized.

The decision to approve the law came after a night of heated debate and a brawl that left one opposition member of parliament with a bloody nose. Media reported that Ali ihsan Kökturk, deputy for the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), was hospitalized with a broken nose.
