Egypt's Presidential Elections Commission issues regulations for upcoming polls

Egypt's Presidential Elections Commission (PEC), the judicial body tasked with supervising Egypt's upcoming presidential elections, has issued the executive regulations for a newly issued law governing the polls.

The 55-article regulations define the procedures of the PEC's meetings and the application documents required from hopeful candidates, among other matters.

According to article 15, those wishing to run in the elections should be able to apply to the PEC over a period between 10 and 30 days.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again accused US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen of attempting to incite chaos in Turkey ahead of key local elections.

Erdogan made the remarks in an election rally in the town of Manisa on Sunday, describing Gulen as the leader of “neo-Ergenekon.” Ergenekon was the name of an organization with links to Turkey’s military which Erdogan accused of attempting to topple his government.

Aburizal not worried about Jokowi’s electability

Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie, who is also the party’s presidential candidate, has said he is not worried about the high electability rating of Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle’s (PDI-P) presidential candidate, by several surveys.

“Pak Jokowi is my good friend and my younger brother. I know him well. Everything is normal during such a contest,” Aburizal told journalists on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He was speaking before attending an open campaign at Kuncup square in Pringsewu, Lampung.

When lawyer Taufik Basari visited constituents in his Jakarta district to distribute leaflets telling them why he deserved their vote, many asked him why the envelope was missing.

"Some residents opened the fold of the leaflet, expecting to find money, and asked 'Pak, where is the envelope?'," said the 37-year-old first-time legislative candidate for the National Democratic Party (NasDem). "They are still expecting cash or generous handouts of groceries. But I tell them, a political office is a mandate. That cannot be bought - it is priceless."

Popularity isn’t everything, says Dems

Democratic Party executive chairman Syarifuddin Hassan says popularity is not the only thing a presidential candidate must acquire to be successful.

“Popularity isn’t everything. It’s not the only thing you need to win people’s hearts,” he said in Jakarta on Saturday, commenting on the official declaration of Jokowi as a presidential candidate.

Syarifuddin, who is also cooperatives and small and medium enterprises minister, said Jokowi always came in first when it came to popularity. The Jakarta governor, he said, was widely known by the public.

Indonesia needs tax-savvy leader: NGOs

A coalition of Jakarta-based NGOs has called on presidential aspirants to publicly share their plans on how to increase tax revenue, as the country is in dire need of public support to finance its future development.

The coalition, known as the Independent Commission for State Budget (KAI), said presidential hopefuls, for example, must reveal their target on the level of tax revenue-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio, or tax ratio, should they become official candidates.

Top government officials request meeting with Darfuri tribal leader

Senior Sudanese officials have made a request to meet the leader of the Darfurian Arab Mahameed clan and MP, Musa Hilal, to convince him to end his undeclared mutiny in North Darfur state and stop bloody attacks carried out by his militias against the army.

Hilal’s forces seized five areas in North Darfur state following clashes against government troops over the last few weeks. The tribal leader is currently living in one of those areas after leaving Khartoum a year earlier.

PKS upbeat ahead of election

The Islamic-based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has claimed that it has regained the public's trust and is confident it would score big in the legislative election, which is set to take place on April 9.

Speaking at a party rally on Sunday at the Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, PKS chairman Anis Matta said the party had “fully recovered” from the impact of the beef graft case and was hoping to finish in the top three in the upcoming election.
