A political analyst says the people of Bahrain will remain “resolute” in their calls for freedom, stressing that the Manama regime’s heavy-handed crackdown cannot “quiet” the ongoing protests, Press TV reports.
In an interview with Press TV on Monday, Colin Cavell, a former professor at the University of Bahrain, criticized the ruling al-Khalifa regime in the Arab country for stepping up the clampdown on dissent, saying such a move will not “scare” and “quiet” the anti-regime protesters in the Persian Gulf country.
“We have seen for the past three years in Bahrain [that] the people are resolute and determined and they are going to get their liberation no matter what,” Cavell said.
On March 30, a court in Bahrain sentenced 13 anti-regime protesters, including several teenagers, to life in prison on charges of ‘attempting to kill a policeman and participating in an anti-regime protest outside the capital, Manama, in 2012.’
In a similar move on March 26, a Bahraini court handed jail terms of up to 10 years to 29 anti-regime protesters. They were accused of having been behind an attack with petrol bombs and iron rods on a police center in the village of Sitra in April 2012.
Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, primarily calling for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.
Dozens of people have been killed in the crackdown, and security forces have arrested hundreds, including doctors and nurses.
In February, Amnesty International censured Bahrain’s “relentless repression” of the anti-regime protesters, saying the authorities in the country must allow the demonstrators to hold peaceful rallies “without the fear of reprisal or attack."
