PETALING JAYA: PKR polls contenders Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Nurul Izzah Anwar and Rafizi Ramli are forming an alliance in a bid to return the party to its “original values of Reformasi”.
Announcing this at the launch of their Masa Depan Bersama campaign yesterday, the trio also presented a list of events scheduled nationwide in the run-up to the party elections, which begin on April 25.
Saifuddin, who is currently PKR secretary-general, will be contesting the deputy president’s post while vice-president Nurul Izzah and strategic director Rafizi are vying for the vice-president’s posts.
“The election is not a fight to the death nor is it the case of a winner takes all,” said Saifuddin.
“The losers will not disappear without a trace. Rather, the winners will have responsibilities to fulfil while losers also have a role to play.”
Nurul Izzah said the alliance was a way for collective leadership to be ingrained in the PKR.
“This pact displays the values of Reformasi as it originally was, and this can pave the way towards strengthening the party,” she added.
Meanwhile, Rafizi expressed the need to move away from personalities, citing as example the recent clash between Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.
“There is no point in being a political party if what we fight for does not benefit the public. The contest must remain true to what PKR is and why we are in politics in the first place,” he added.
Saifuddin will be up against incumbent Azmin, Khalid, vice-president Tian Chua, Hulu Selangor branch member Datuk K. Ramachandran and former Puchong division chief S. Murali.
Nurul Izzah and Rafizi are two of the 16 hopefuls, including Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh and Padang Serai MP N. Surendran, contesting for the three vice-president’s posts.
