KARACHI: The ousted Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regime has been accused of rigging zonal elections of the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA).

According to Mohammad Shoaib Dar, the PCB announced the result of the election for the West Zone Cricket Association president in defiance of court orders. Dar was the losing candidate as the board declared Rai Zulfiqar head of the zone after the voting.

“As per the directions of the Lahore High Court (LHC), I had one key to the ballot box, the other key was with the other candidate [Zulfiqar]. The ballot box was sealed but the PCB officials went ahead and broke the seal and a day later declared Zulfiqar the new president.”

A PCB media release on April 18 said, “The election result of East, West and North Zone, held on November 26, 2013, are announced today at PCB headquarter Gaddafi Stadium Lahore by Ahmad Shahzad Farooq Rana, the PCB election commissioner, after the disposal of [a] writ petition by the Lahore High Court. The results were announced in the presence of the contesting candidates.”

Shoaib said he was not present at the stadium and was not even asked to come.

“I had no clue about the election result announcement. I only got the news though media in the evening and read the notification the next day.”

A PCB official denied the accusations. “We had told both the candidates in advance. Dar chose not to make it to the stadium on the day of the result announcement, hence the seal [of the ballot box] had to be broken. There is no truth in his allegation.”
