The political scene in BiH was shaken Monday as Nenad Stevandic, one of highest officials in Serb Democratic Party (SDS), announced that he is not a member of this party any more.

At the press conference in Banja Luka, Stevandic explained why he decided to leave the biggest opposition party in Republic of Srpska, which is also part of the ruling coalition on the BiH level.

“SDS has abandoned its position and does not pursue the policy for which it has received so many votes on last general elections. This present policy of SDS is fatal for Republic of Srpska and will be fatal for this party in future”, said Stevandic to media.

He added that SDS is ready to support the transfer of responsibilities from the level of RS to state level, like was the case before with military responsibilities, tax administration many other responsibilities. He said that new set of laws is prepared and these laws are not good for RS.

“We will wait for them in an atmosphere of total discord and situation in RS which is on the edge of conflict. I don’t want to be punished by people because I didn’t warn about that. Several well paid positions on the BiH government level, which SDS got by forming a coalition with Bakir Izetbegovic and his Party of democratic action, are not worth to destroy RS”, said Stevandic and accused SDS president, Mladen Bosic, that he has canceled all party bodies and rules alone without the agreement of other members.

Stevandic is also a vice president of RS National Assembly and, as he said, there are many MPs who have same opinion about SDS. Stevandic, however, emphasized that he will not form a group and will not join another party in the Assembly. He also said that everybody who gathers 41 voices in Assembly to change present RS Government can count on his voice, depending what it will be offered.

Stevandic’s decision is a shock but it was not such a big surprise. Since the beginning of May he repeatedly criticized SDS leadership for absolute abandoning of idea of a strong RS as the basic party idea for decades. He also accused them that they are not working for RS interests in BiH state institutions, but for their private interests. Several days ago, Stevandic announced that he freezes his work in the party, while on Sunday he published a message on Twitter: “Napoleon saying – It is better to have 100 donkeys led by a lion than 100 lions led by a donkey”.

The SDS Party still didn’t react on Stevandic’s decision
