4,088 announce intent to contest poll

RIAYDH: Some 54 percent of candidates, out of 7,500 expected in the fray, have confirmed their intention to contest the upcoming municipal council elections in the Kingdom with submission of requests to license their polling campaigns.
Jadee Al-Qahtani, chairman of the executive committee and official spokesman of the Municipal Elections Committee, said Wednesday that the total number of candidates requesting licenses for electoral campaigns reached 4,088.
He revealed that the elections to be held on Dec. 12 for 284 council seats include 1,039 women candidates.
He said that the highest number of requests for electoral campaign licenses was recorded by the local committee in the Riyadh region which received 660 applications, followed by the Qassim region with 424 applications and Asir with 378.
Other important regions receiving campaign requests included Jazan (365), Jeddah (356) Hail (264), Tabuk (244), Madinah (231), Al-Baha (207), Al-Jouf (164), Eastern Provice (160), Taif (142) and Al-Ahsa (131).
He pointed out that local committees in all regions will review requests for electoral campaign licenses in order to issue necessary licenses to start candidates’ campaigns after the completion of statutory procedures.
According to the regulations for the electoral campaign, licenses must be issued at least one week before the final declaration of the list of candidates.
The general election committee has divided campaign licenses into three categories (A, B and C).
The A category license includes provisions for the establishment of an electoral headquarters, the medium of propaganda like advertising in media, electoral meetings, lectures and seminars, while the B category includes the establishment of an electoral headquarters, advertising in media, electoral meetings, lectures and seminars. With limited options, C category authorizes the candidates to advertising in the media, electoral meetings, lectures and seminars. The election committee has approved 1,236 polling centers in municipalities and secretariats across the Kingdom. Additional centers will be opened if required.
