The Meshrano Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) in its plenary session on Tuesday called on government to send the presidential decree on electoral reforms to parliament.

A number of senators alleged that the government is not interested in bringing about electoral reforms.

They said that it has been almost a month since the decree was issued but it has not been sent to parliament so far.

"The time is short. The second constitutional decree of the president on the [election commissions'] selection committee and electoral reforms should be sent to the parliament soon and the reforms should be implemented," said Gul Ahmad Azimi, a senator.

Safiullah Hashimi, another senator, said: "We saw that the [presidential] elections results were not announced in its due time and this is a problem. Electoral reforms should be brought so as to prevent this situation."

The senators said should the government not take serious steps for electoral reforms public trust in the government will dwindle.

"The more that the process is delayed and the government fails to perform its duties, the more people's trust in government and elections will decrease," said Mohammad Alam Ezadyar, a member of the Meshrano Jirga.

Bringing about electoral reforms was one of the main promises of the National Unity Government's leaders. However, it has been almost two years since the formation of the NUG and the selection committee has still not started its work to implement electoral reforms. ‎
