The Bosnian parliament’s House of Peoples on Tuesday passed a law allowing for the postponement of the census for 2013 for six months. The law was adopted under urgent procedures, on the request of the state-level Council of Ministers.
Adoption of the law in practice means that the census will now be held from 1-15 October this year, and not in April.
The European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, had suggested it be moved to October. It recommended the delay for technical reasons, citing insufficient technical readiness in Bosnia's Agency for Statistics, suggesting a potential risk of unreliable and useless data if the census was held in April, as first planned.
This will be the first census in Bosnia since the 1992-5 war. The last one was held in 1991 when Bosnia was part of the former six-republic Yugoslav federation.
