Egypt govt committee issues constituencies decision

A government committee has agreed to reduce the number of parliamentary constituencies to 205 from 206, in line with the view of the State Council, Transitional Justice Minister Ibrahim El-Heneidy has said.

 

The decision was agreed by the committee and the legislation department at the State Council.

El-Heneidy, who heads the committee responsible for amending the election laws, said he would notify the cabinet about the legislation department's approval of the amendments.

Journalists' Syndicate rejects 'attacks on freedoms' by Egypt's authorities

Egypt's Journalists' Syndicate board said on Monday it rejects what it described as "a continuous attack on the freedom of the press" by the government.

 

The board also added that such attacks were apparent in recent complaints by the Ministry of Interior against journalists who published articles that were critical of the government.

El ex primer ministro y excandidato presidencial egipcio Ahmed Shafiq ha presentado su dimisión como líder del Movimiento Nacional Egipcio “por las difíciles circunstancias” en las que practica su función, informaron hoy los medios egipcios.

Shafiq, que fundó a finales de 2012 esa formación política y fue el último primer ministro del derrocado dictador Hosni Mubarak, envió anoche un mensaje con su renuncia al primer vicepresidente del partido, Yehia Qadri.

Egypt's Press Syndicate is to hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the ongoing crackdown on journalists and press freedom, the head of the syndicate’s freedoms committee, Khaled El-Balshy, told Ahram Online.

 

“The interior ministry and many other governmental apparatuses have been filing frequent legal complaints against journalists, and these are all proof that the current government is targeting journalists,” El-Balshy said.

“I don’t have any information about a coming cabinet reshuffle,” said Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab Wednesday, commenting on speculation that he himself might leave office ‎sometime soon.

Reports have circulated in the Egyptian media of a possible cabinet reshuffle as President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi publicly criticised on Monday a number of ministers, including Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab.

 

El-Sisi, who completes one year in office on Tuesday, told Mahlab "You promised me you'll be a bulldozer to pave the road. Where is this bulldozer?"

The president, who was the military chief before resigning to run for office, also criticised the cabinet's delay in digging up wells to cultivate lands, state news agency MENA reported.

Egypt's opposition parties organise petition to abolish protest law

A petition calling upon Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court to review a controversial protest law was signed by 358 people in two weeks, Khaled Dawoud, spokesperson for the Constitution party said Tuesday during a press conference at the Egypt Freedom Party headquarters.

 

The new petition calls upon the Supreme Constitutional Court to consider a lawsuit, filed in June 2014 by lawyers Khaled Ali and Tarek El-Awady, that challenges the constitutionality of the protest law.

32 small political parties heed Sisi's call for unified electoral list

Thirty-two Egyptian political parties have agreed to form a joint electoral list for the upcoming parliamentary elections, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

 

Ahmed El-Fadali, the leader of the Independence Current political coalition, announced at a press conference on Sunday that the small, mostly newly-founded, parties have “answered President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s call for unity of parties” by forming a joint electoral list.

In January El-Sisi had called for political parties standing in the delayed elections to join together in a single coalition. 

Egypt's NCHR says 2600 killed since Morsi's ouster

Egypt's National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) said on Sunday that 2600 civilians, security forces and members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood died in violent acts from June 2013 to the end of 2014.

 

Of the 2600 dead, the majority were Muslim Brotherhood members at 1250, while 700 were security forces and 550 were ordinary people, according to a report issued by the NCHR.

Egypt's authorities have mounted a fierce crackdown on Islamists since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 after mass protests against his rule.

Egypt's Wafd Party expels seven opposition board members

The Wafd party's board decided Friday afternoon to expel several leading members who have recently formed an opposition group against the current party head El-Sayid El-Badawy as internal crisis continues to rock Egypt's oldest liberal party.

 

In a meeting at the party's headquarters in Giza, the Wafd's high board expelled seven board members including Fouad Badrawy, Essam Sheha, Sherif Taher and Yassin Tag El-Din from the party permanently.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is to meet on Wednesday with political party leaders to discuss amendments made to the election law, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

 

According to the amended Parliamentary Elections Law, the new parliament will consist of 596 seats: 448 for independent candidates, 120 for party-based candidates elected through lists, and 28 appointed by the president.

Just like they drafted unified amendments for election laws last week, a number of Egyptian political parties have said that they plan to issue a unified report about President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s first year in office.

 

El-Sisi won Egypt's presidential elections by a landslide majority of 96 percent after a three-day vote in May, 2014. El-Sisi's one rival, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, won almost 4 percent.

In a statement to reporters, Egypt's political parties announced on Tuesday that President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi had officially received a copy of their proposed unified amendments for three laws necessary to pave the way for the country's long-delayed parliamentary elections.

 

The three laws regulate the performance of the House of Representatives, the Division of Electoral Constituencies, and the Exercise of Political Rights, according to Anwar Al-Sadat, chairman of the liberal Reform and Development Party.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab officially delegated Sunday Minister of Transitional Justice Ibrahim El-Heneidy to take charge of the Ministry of Justice until a new justice minister is appointed, the cabinet spokesman told Ahram Online.

 

Spokesman Hossam Gaweesh said there is no date yet set for the appointment of a new minister.

Former Justice Minister Mahfouz Saber handed-in his resignation last week after making comments that were widely seen as classist.
