Mullah cleric says no for referendum in 'religious democracy'

Mashhad’s firebrand Friday prayer leader hardline Ayatollah Ahmad Alamolhoda says there is no room in Iran for a referendum, Radio Farda reported on Saturday.

Chiming in with others close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Alamolhoda reacted to President Hassan Rouhani’s suggestion for holding referendum to settle disputes in the Iranian society.

Alamolhoda said that suggesting a referendum is tantamount to supporting a secular democracy.

Alamolhoda stressed that it is only the Supreme Leader who can call for a referendum.

Former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was reportedly arrested in Shiraz city for inciting unrest, Al Arabiya reported on Sunday.

Ahmadinejad, who served as the president of Iran from 2005 to 2013, will be placed under house arrest if Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei grants permission to the authorities to do so, according to Al Arabiya. The news of his arrest has been reported by several news outlets.

Iranian State Officials Clash Over Allowing Religious Minorities in Local Elections

The head of Iran's judiciary has sided with proponents of banning religious minorities from local elections while the Rouhani government has reiterated their rights as citizens under the Constitution. 

In his October 31 remarks, Chief Justice Sadegh Larijani said that the ban was the Guardian Council's prerogative as the country's highest authority in determining legislative compliance with Islamic principles.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s parliament began vetting President Hassan Rouhani’s nominees for the two remaining cabinet posts on Sunday, two months after all his proposed ministerial picks except one managed to win the vote of confidence from the lawmakers.

Intensive talks are underway in the parliament about the credentials and backgrounds of Reza Ardakanian and Mansour Gholami, who have been nominated for the positions of the minister of science, research and technology and the energy minister respectively.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Polling stations across Iran opened on Friday morning for the 12th presidential election, the 5th City and Village Councils elections, and the Parliament’s midterm election.

63,429 polling stations across Iran opened at 8 am local time on Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli’s order. Around 14,000 mobile ballot boxes have been also prepared for inaccessible and rural areas.

Iranians headed to the polls as soon as the stations opened to elect the country’s 8th president.

Campaigning has begun for Iran's presidential election with incumbent Hassan Rouhani facing a tough battle against Principlists who criticize his handling of the economy.   

Rouhani’s main rivals in the race appear to be Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi, a senior cleric who heads a major charity organization, as well as Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.  

Rouhani’s deputy Es’haq Jahangiri as well as two more low-key candidates are the other contenders who had their qualifications approved by the Guardian Council, Iran’s top vetting body.

Wednesday afternoon, Iranian media reported that televised debates among presidential candidates would not be livestreamed, but recorded before being broadcast by state-run TV for the citizens. The decision, according to media, was made in the latest session of the Committee for Monitoring Presidential Election Campaigns, a legal body assigned to guarantee that electoral candidates receive an equal share of public facilities during the campaign period.

Iran’s Interior Ministry on Thursday night gave the following list of candidates (in alphabetical order) vetted by the Guardian Council.

Iran’s incumbent president, Hassan Rouhani, has put his name down for the upcoming 12th presidential election.

Rouhani arrived at the Iranian Interior Ministry's Election Office on Friday.

The registration process for the May 19 presidential election began on Tuesday and is scheduled to close on Saturday. 

Rouhani has been a member of the Assembly of Experts, the head of the Expediency Council's Center for Strategic Research, and a member of the Expediency Council.

Ahmadinejad registered for presidential election along with his close aide, former vice-president and head of Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) Hamid Baqayee.

He was also accompanied by his former chief of staff Esfandiar Rahim Mashayee.

Candidates started on Tuesday enrollment for presidential election.

"With the loss of Hashemi," he said on Sunday referring to the late Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, "I know no other personality with whom I had such a common and long-term experience in the peaks and valleys of this historic era."
