PETALING JAYA: Despite the chaos of the PKR elections, especially in Selangor, the party’s elections chairman Datuk Johari Abdul has deemed it as “a success”.

In a press conference held at the party headquarters yesterday, Johari played down the reports of the irregularaties which led to the elections at 27 out of 198 divisions to be suspended.

He said the participation from the candidates and voter turnout was higher than the last party election in 2010.

PETALING JAYA: Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim will take former Kapar member of parliament S. Manikavasagam to court for accusing him of corrupt practices and vote-buying.

“I have ordered the lawyer to submit a Notice of Claim suit against Manikavasagam for accusing me of corruption by buying votes,” Khalid tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Manikavasagam has claimed that he has audio recordings which suggest that an officer aligned to Khalid was paying people RM50 each for votes.

PETALING JAYA: PAS Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad has said that the fate of Terengganu ought to be left to the people, and suggested fresh elections as a solution to the crisis that erupted with the resignation of former Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said from Umno on Monday.

“Fresh elections will ensure more stability and certainty in the state. It will also be more fair to the people,” he said told The Star Online on Tuesday.

“Our attitude at the moment is to wait and see the overall development unfold,” said Raja Kamarul.

GEORGE TOWN: An independent candidate contesting in the Bukit Gelugor by-election has claimed that he is still a member of PAS, and not Umno as claimed by certain Opposition party leaders.

"I am a PAS member and several top party (PAS) leaders have known me since my early involvement in politics," said Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar (pic).

Mohamed Nabi Bux, 63, denied he was an Umno member as alleged by PAS leaders and said its deputy president Mohamad Sabu had even given a ceramah (talk) at his house in Kampung Banjar, Gombak, back in 2000.

Bukit Gelugor by-election: It's a four-way fight, fifth aspirant rejected

GEORGE TOWN: It will be a four-cornered fight for the Bukit Gelugor by-election to be held on May 25.

When nominations closed Monday morning, four candidates had submitted their papers at the nomination centre in Dewan Sri Pinang, while a fifth was rejected.

Those contesting are DAP's Ramkarpal Singh, Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan, retiree Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abd Sathar and lawyer Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan, both Independents.

The newly-formed Penang Front Party failed in its nomination bid to contest in the by-election.

PETALING JAYA: PKR has suspended party polls indefinitely in 27 divisions nationwide due to irregularities and discrepancies. 

Election Committee chairman Datuk Johari Abdul said on Monday that PKR was not in a rush to hold a re-election, as the party had until November to evaluate the complaints and sort out the issues. 

"We are in no hurry to do it. We might do it in stages because we will have more manpower in each division to manage the polling," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants members to give their full commitment and dedication to the upcoming by-elections.

"We will be facing one or two by-elections soon and our deputy chairman and his committee has prepared the right strategies.

"There will be short and long term challenges but if we have enough love and care for the party, as well as commitment and dedication, and InsyaAllah..I think Umno and Barisan will continue to succeed," he said at Umno's 68th Anniversary celebration at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) on Sunday.

PKR polls: Elections at nine Selangor branches cancelled

PETALING JAYA: Elections in at least nine PKR branches in Selangor have been cancelled.

Arfa’eza Abdul Aziz, press secretary to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, said in her tweets that the party's election commission decided to cancel the polls in Subang, Hulu Langat, Sabak Bernam, Kuala Langat, Sepang, Klang, Kuala Selangor, Kota Raja and Selayang.

She said the party's election commission in charge of Kuala Selangor had called for polls in the branch to be cancelled after it was found that representatives of a candidate were voting on behalf of voters.

Penang MCA fully supports decision not to contest Bukit Gelugor by-election

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang MCA fully supported the MCA presidential council's decision not to contest in the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election this May 25.

Its liaison committee chairman Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said MCA needed to give full attention to the issue arising from PAS' proposal on the hudud law implementation.

"The Penang MCA liaison committee considers that the implementation of the hudud law by Pas will trigger a constitutional crisis.

Bukit Gelugor by-election: PCM vice-president announces candidacy

GEORGE TOWN: Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan (pic) has announced his candidacy for the upcoming Bukit Gelugor by-election.

“Everyday, I will be walking around the market to communicate with the people so that they may voice out any problems they have with the DAP,” said Huan at a press conference on Friday.

The Bukit Gelugor seat fell vacant following the untimely demise of its member of parliament Karpal Singh on April 17.

 

Polling is on May 25 with nomination day set for May 12.

 

PKR polls: Azmin still in the lead as elections head into final weekend

PETALING JAYA: Incumbent PKR deputy president Azmin Ali (pic) is still leading in the race for the No. 2 post at the end of the second week of the ongoing party polls.

The election committee announced on Friday that Azmin had obtained 9876 votes to date in the race for the deputy presidency, with Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in second spot with 6217 votes. Saifuddin Nasution who was in second place last week, dropped to third, having obtained just 5717 votes.

GEORGE TOWN: A PAS member is all set to contest in the upcoming Bukit Gelugor by-election.

Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abd Sathar, 63, said his main purpose for standing in the by-election was to educate the people of Penang about PAS’ hudud.

The retiree, who is a Gombak PAS member, said he will seek to bring changes to the constituency should he win.

He also stressed that he would seek to contest under the PAS banner, but would run as an independent should he not get the party’s approval.

MIC men quizzed over party polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the MIC election steering committee, which oversaw the party elections last year, have been questioned by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) following complaints of alleged irregularities by party leaders.

The five – chairman Tan Sri K. Kumaran, Selva Mookiah, Datuk S.S. Rajagopal, Datuk V. Jagarasah, and Datuk V. Sivaparanjothi – were questioned on the running and conduct of the Nov 30 party elections held in Malacca.

Also queried by ROS was the party’s information chief L. Siva Subramaniam.

Teluk Intan by-election set for May 31, nomination on May 19

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has set May 31 as polling day for the Teluk Intan by-election following the death of its MP Seah Leong Peng from cancer on May 1.

Nomination will be on May 19 while early voting is set for May 27.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof made the announcement after chairing a special meeting on the by-election at the commission's headquarters here on Thursday.

EC: Three enforcement teams to monitor Bukit Gelugor by-election

GEORGE TOWN: Three enforcement teams, which will also include representatives of the parties contesting, will assist in monitoring the flow of the by-election process for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat scheduled for May 25.

Penang acting director of the Election Commission (EC) Azizal Ahmad said on Wednesday the team would also include a police officer with the rank of Inspector or higher and a representative of the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP).

KAJANG: DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang is only worried about the split of Pakatan Rakyat and not national unity while addressing the PAS’ hudud issue, says MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

“I am sad that at this point, when our national unity is at risk, Lim is only worried about his own party when he should be worried about the change in the country’s Constitution,” Liow said at the installation ceremony of the newly-elected committee members of the Selangor and Federal Territory Federation of Social Clubs here on Monday night.

Bukit Gelugor by-election: DAP to name candidate on Saturday

GEORGE TOWN: DAP will announce its candidate for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election on Saturday, with Ramkarpal Singh (pix), third son of the late Karpal Singh, among those shortlisted.

State DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the announcement would be made at noon after the launching of the party’s by-elections operations centre in Island Park, Jalan Masjid Negeri.

Penang DAP reportedly submitted names of five candidates to the party’s central executive committee.

PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president hopeful Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said his contenders, incumbent deputy president Azmin Ali and Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, have factions.

“If you follow them closely (on their campaign trail), you can see their own followers.

"That is also considered a pact, only I chose to announce it openly,” he said at a press conference at PKR headquarters here on Monday.

On Sunday, Azmin warned against formation of alliances, groupings and cartels, stressing it would not augur well for the future of the party.

Parliament cannot abolish local government elections, Federal Court hears

PUTRAJAYA: Abolishing local government elections is beyond Parliament’s power as it contradicts the Federal Constitution, the Federal Court heard Tuesday.

Lawyer Tommy Thomas, representing the Penang government, said in amending prior laws, Parliament cannot change the basic structure of the Constitution.

The state government and former Aliran president P. Ramakrishnan have petitioned to challenge the validity of Section 15 of the Local Government Act 1976, which prevented state legislatures from providing for local government elections within their states.
