Socialistas y conservadores albaneses reclaman victoria en elecciones locales

La coalición gobernante de izquierda dirigida por el Partido Socialista (PS) y los conservadores del Partido Democrático (PD) se atribuyen la victoria en las elecciones municipales celebradas hoy en Albania de las que aún no hay claros resultados.

"Basándonos en la participación de nuestros simpatizantes, la más alta en los comicios locales, tenemos el derecho de pensar que hemos ganado", declaró a la prensa la diputada socialista, Olta Xhacka.

Albania celebra mañana domingo elecciones locales, consideradas de gran importancia para modernizar el poder local, y probar la madurez democrática y la determinación del país de seguir en el camino de adhesión a la Unión Europea (UE). 

Este pequeño país balcánico, que obtuvo el estatus de candidato a entrar en la UE en junio del año pasado, está a la espera de se que reinicien las negociaciones para ingresar en el club europeo.

“Albanian courts have become like burlesques and I’m looking forward to autumn when we will pass the package of the reform in justice”.

This was said by PM Edi Rama a day ago, warning a revolution in the Albanian justice system.

Mr. Rama says that he considers courts as “the most corrupt, abusive and ridiculous powers that have made Albania a disgrace”.

Recalling the national operation against the theft of power supply, Rama warns: “What we have done with power supply is nothing to what we have done with the judicial system”.

MEP Urges Albania Parties to Cut Crime Links

Eduard Kukan, former Slovak foreign minister and Member of the European Parliament, on Friday urged Albania's parties to respect the law and to fulfil promises to ban people with criminal backgrouns from holding or stand for office.  

Speaking ahead of the local elections, he called them "an important test for the consolidation of democratic processes in Albania and the country's further EU integration.

The prosecutor’s office has demanded the removal of 2,800 names from the electoral roll in Durres after an investigation revealed that the mayor had added thousands of non-resident voters to the list, based on falsified on rent contracts with a company owned by the municipality.

The opposition Democratic Party filed a complaint with the CEC, which in turn asked the prosecutor’s office to investigate accusations of fraud.  

Albanian Justice System Slammed as Totally Corrupt

A Special Parliamentary Commission on Monday delivered a damning report on the courts in Albania, saying corruption is widespread at all levels.

This includes the appointment of judges in the most important courts.

The report says judges pay between €100,000 to €300,000 to the High Council of Justice, the body that nominates judges, to get their posts, or to move to better positions within the system.

Majority in Albania is seeing the opposition’s proposal for a decriminalization pact, as pure electoral propaganda ahead of the June 21 elections.

In the recent days,  Democratic Party has proposed to the majority to sign a pact between political parties in order to verify the candidates that race for the June 21 elections in the framework of decriminalization and the removal of those candidates with criminal records.

In Albania, the opposition has publicly invited majority to sign an agreement together where they engage in removing incriminated persons from electoral lists.

Democrat MP, Oerd Bylykbashi, senior DP official from the largest party of the opposition, said that the request with four points has been officially sent to the heads of the majority two weeks ago, but so far there has not been any reply.

Albania Rejects Fining TV Stations For Bias

Albania's Central Election Commission has rejected proposals from the bipartisan Media Monitoring Board to fine seven news television stations for offering unequal amounts of coverage to political parties campaigning for the local elections on June 21.

The Commission ruled by four to three against the proposed fines on Monday in a vote aparently determined by the political affiliations of the board members.

The main political parties in Albania officially started electoral campaigns on Saturday for the next local elections, but the first days of the campaign were marred by claims of irregularities.

On Saturday, Zef Hila, the opposition Democratic Party candidate for the municipality of Vau i Dejes, alleged that he was subjected to harassment by police officers.

“I have denounced this violence from uniformed police officers for weeks, but this is still going on,” Hila said in a statement published by the Democratic Party.

In Albania, the opposition says that it will accept to collaborate with the government after the local government elections only if the latter meets several conditions that aim at relaxing the austerity measures imposed upon the citizens.

Democrat leader, Lulzim Basha said today that “there will be collaboration with the government after the elections only if it [government] accepts the platform for the reduction of the price of energy and fuel, the pardoning of late payment charges and the reduction of taxes”.

President of Albania launched a strong appeal today for voters asking them not to sell their vote on June 21.

Bujar Nishani addressed the nation (photo) about the 21 June 2015 local government elections.

At the focus of his message was the call not to sell the vote. “Do not sell your vote! It has no price. Selling your vote is a disgrace which will tarnish you all. The candidate that buys your vote, does not respect you, he only lies you, despises you and hates you”, Mr. Nishani says.

Albanian political parties may score the same election result, polls suggest

The results of a recent poll for the main municipalities in the country, indicate that the current majority is still strong, while the opposition continues with the same results.

Meanwhile, 21,2% of respondents said that they have not decided who to vote.

The poll for the June 21 local government elections, was carried out by IPR, an Italian based research institute. With the results collected in the 2009 and 2013 election polls, this institute was very close to the official result.
