Rebeldes sudaneses lanzan ofensiva contra el ejército en Darfur y Kordofán

Grupos rebeldes sudaneses han lanzado una ofensiva contra el ejército sudanés en los estados conflictivos de Darfur (oeste) y Kordofán (sur) como muestra de su rechazo de los comicios presidenciales y parlamentarios previstos para abril.

El rebelde Movimiento Popular para la Liberación de Sudán/Sector Norte (MPLS-N) explicó hoy en un comunicado que la ofensiva comenzó el pasado jueves contra las tropas sudanesas en las regiones de Kalugui, Tusi y Al Rahmanial, en Kordofán del Sur, y Rukru, en Darfur, y subrayó que continuarán con los ataques.

Sudan’s ruling party welcomes Berlin Declaration

The National Congress Party (NCP) has formally welcomed the Berlin Declaration signed by the opposition forces in the German capital on 27 February.

After expressing its reservations last week, the Sudanese government issued a statement, saying that “after studying the document, the party’s political sector extends its thanks and appreciation to the German government. [..] The NCP stresses its firm stance on the national dialogue which includes everyone without exception in order to reach a consensus which supports security, stability, and peaceful exchange of power in Sudan.”

Sudan opposition: 'Elections end Berlin Declaration'

The opposition groups will stop their preparations for participating in the National Dialogue of Sudan if the country holds its general elections on 13 April. The preparatory meeting they are planning to hold with the ruling party aims to put these elections on hold.

Yasir Saeed Arman, the Secretary-General of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) and Foreign Relations Secretary of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) stated that he considers the holding of the upcoming elections an end for the recently signed Berlin Declaration.

Sudan’s National Election Commission (NEC) disclosed that 102 candidates had withdrawn from the general elections scheduled for April.

National Liberation and Justice Party launched in Sudan’s capital

On Monday, the founding conference of the National Liberation and Justice Party, led by Dr El Tijani Sese, was launched at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum.

Sese, who is also chairman of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA), said in his opening speech that “today, we celebrate the birth of a new political entity, named the National Liberation and Justice Party. Besides constituting a valuable addition to democracy, it will add flavour to a sound party life in the country”.

Las elecciones generales sudanesas, presidenciales y legislativas, se celebrarán los próximos días 13, 14 y 15 de abril, anunció hoy el presidente de la Comisión Electoral nacional, Mujtar al Asam.

Los comicios terminarán el 15 de abril a las 15.00 GMT, aunque Al Asam no precisó la hora de apertura de los colegios electorales de ninguno de los tres días.

Asimismo, Al Asam, explicó que se han establecido 7.133 colegios electorales en todas las provincias del país y añadió que el recuento de los votos empezará el 16 de abril.

The Sudanese National Election Commission (NEC) has officially cleared 15 candidates to contest next April's presidential and general elections.

The 14 candidates, who will contest against incumbent President Omar Al-Bashir, are little known except Prof. Fatima Abdul Mahmud.

Mahmud, who in the 2010 elections stood as candidate for the Sudanese Socialist Union, a party formed by late president Ja'afar Mohamed Nimeiri, 1969-1985, is herself a veteran politician.

Sudanese opposition parties which agreed to participate in the national dialogue process called for by president Omer Hassan al-Bashir earlier this year, failed to reach a decision on boycotting the process amid diverging views at a meeting today.

The meeting which was comprised of the Popular Congress Party (PCP), Reform Now Party (RNP) and Just Peace Forum (JPF) discussed the current political situation and recent developments after the leader of the National Umma Party (NUP) al-Sadiq al-Mahdi was arrested last month.

The Reform Now Party (RNP), which is led by a ruling party dissident, has announced its intention to suspend its participation in the ongoing national dialogue process in response to what it described as a series of setbacks to political freedoms in the country.

The decision came in a meeting of the RNP politburo on Wednesday and disclosed its intention to lobby other dialogue participants to adopt same measure as the "correct position" which would force the government to commit to the deliverables of dialogue.

Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) has revealed they are in contact with the government to press them on issuing a presidential decree to release the leader of the National Umma Party (NUP), al-Sadiq al-Mahdi.

PCP political secretary, Kamal Omer Abdel-Salam, told Sudan Tribune on Wednesday that his party leader Hassan al-Turabi met with al-Mahdi in prison on Tuesday and discussed the political implications of his arrest besides the joint coordination between the PCP and the NCP in the coming period.

The National Congress Party (NCP) political secretary reaffirmed Tuesday the importance of the participation of the National Umma Party (NUP) leader Sadiq al-Mahdi in the national dialogue process.

Mustafa Osman Ismail who is also tasked with relations between the ruling party and the opposition party further described the detained leader “as national figure who has significant political weight”.

Sudan’s opposition National Umma Party (NUP) has belied press reports quoting its imprisoned leader al-Sadiq al-Mahdi as saying that he is committed to national dialogue despite his detention.

The NUP politburo in statement on Tuesday, said al-Mahdi is not in a position that would allow him to make statements, stressing that the party institutions are the only credible source of information conveyed from its leader.

It accused the government and its followers of promoting those statements in order to undermine the NUP stances and discredit its leader’s firm positions.

The National Umma Party (NUP) and the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) agreed on Monday to coordinate relentlessly to grab the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the constitution.

The two parties also committed to continuing the dialogue on the country’s situation through a joint mechanism in what appears to be a warming up between the two sides in the wake of NUP leader al-Sadiq al-Mahdi’s arrest this month.

Sudan’s opposition alliance of the National Consensus Forces (NCF) said it has not received an invitation to attend the Sudanese dialogue forum which was due to be held in Germany on Tuesday.

The meeting was supposed to bring together the NCF and the rebel alliance of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) to develop a common platform on constitutional reforms and the national dialogue process.
