Sudanese government and SPLM-N rebels to resume talks next week

The Sudan people’s Liberation Movement –North (SPLM-N) announced the reception of an invitation from the African mediation to resume peace talks with the Sudanese government next week to end the nearly three year conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

The spokesperson of the SPLM-N negotiating team, Mubarak Aradol, said in a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Sunday they received an invitation from African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) to resume talks on 22 April.

The leader of Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP), Hassan Al-Turabi, said they have agreed to engage in unconditional dialogue with the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in order to unify Islamic forces and maintain cohesion of the country.

In an interview with Al-jazeera TV broadcast on Friday, Turabi said that the majority of Sudan’s political parties had accepted the government’s call for dialogue because they realise that arms proliferation is a divisive issue and represents a real danger to unity in the country.

Attabani calls on opposition, rebels to join national dialogue

The leader of the opposition Reform Now Party (RNP), Ghazi Salah Al-Deen Al-Attabani, has called on opposition parties and armed groups who have refused to take part in the government’s initiative for national dialogue to join the process for peace and democratic transformation.

Speaking on a talk show broadcast by the state-runRadio Omdurman on Friday, Attabani said that opposition forces should not miss the opportunity to participate in national dialogue, adding that recent presidential directives opened a new door of hope.

The Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir has issued a presidential decree on Wednesday allowing political parties to carry out their activities and hold public meetings and seminars, as well as giving them equal access to state media.

The move comes within the framework of creating an environment conducive for national dialogue among all political parties.

Bashir announced a series of resolutions at the onset of a political roundtable held on Sunday in Khartoum with the participation of 83 political parties.

Sudan’s opposition umbrella organisation of the National Consensus Forces (NCF) and the rebel Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) have underscored the need to reach a comprehensive solution to the country’s crises and renewed call for establishing a transitional government and an independent body to facilitate the national dialogue.

The two parties demanded in a joint statement read by the NCF leading figure, Yahiya al-Hussein at a press conference on Tuesday a peaceful solution which leads to change.

Sudan’s National and Security Services (NISS) have released several political activists on Monday including five members of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) but the latter said the move fell short of meeting requirements of the national dialogue and accused the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) of circumventing people’s demands.

Sudanese government has renewed its commitment to the African Union brokered process to end the nearly three year conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, pointing that the resumption of talks has been too delayed.

On 12 March, the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) reiterated its confidence in the mediation team of African Union High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) and asked them to reach a peace agreement by 30 April.

The rebel alliance the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) claimed that Chadian troops have been recently deployed in the troubled state of North Darfur and urged to withdraw it.

Since last year, rebels groups in Darfur accuse the neighbouring country of militarily backing the regime of president Omer Al-Bashir. But officials in the two countries speak about a joint force to protect the border.

The deputy secretary-general of the opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) Ali al-Hag Mohamed has urged president Omer Hassan al-Bashir to undertake certain steps in order to ensure success of the national dialogue initiative.

Al-Hag called on Bashir to extend a direct invitation for the rebel umbrella group of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) to take part in the national dialogue without conditions or restrictions and irrespective of their position on the initiative.

The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has reiterated its demand for a comprehensive process to resolve Sudan’s conflicts, demanding the mediation team facilitate meetings with political forces inside the country.

The resolution was endorsed by an extraordinary meeting of the SPLM-N Leadership Council held in rebel-controlled areas in South Kordofan state from 31 March to 3 April. The gathering was chaired by group leader Malik Agar, and also attended by deputy Abdelaziz Hilu and secretary-general Yasir Arman.

Divisions threaten unity of Darfur peace partner group

Divisions within Darfur’s Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) threaten its unity as a faction allegedly led by the group’s secretary-general issued a statement accusing its leader of anti democratic practices.

A group called its self "Reform Stream" issued a statement on Wednesday blaming the group chairman Tijani Al-Sissi to excluding the other members from the decision making process.

Sudan’s rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) has accused second vice-president Hassabo Mohamed Abdel-Rahman of leading a campaign to arm Darfur tribes and described him as “warlord”.

JEM’s secretary of social affairs, Babiker Abakr Hassan Hamadain, said in a press release on Monday that Khartoum continues to mobilise Darfur tribes on a social basis besides targeting certain ethnicities on the same basis.

58 parties agree to take part in Sudan’s national dialogue: NCP

The Sudanese ruling National Congress Party (NCP) has announced that 58 parties agreed to take part in the national dialogue in order to reach a consensual vision among all political forces to resolve the country’s crises.

The NCP reiterated its call for the opposition forces and rebel groups to join the national process, saying any party which refuses to engage in the dialogue would only isolate itself.
