Sudan’s opposition New Forces Movement (HAG) has criticized the initiative launched by the Liberal Democratic Unionist Party (LDUP) to unify opposition forces describing the move as an attempt to “fragment the opposition”.

Several opposition parties and civil society organizations singed on Saturday the “tomorrow’s Sudan” initiative and agreed on a regulatory mechanism to lead their work to end the totalitarian regime.

Sudan’s High Court approved results of the presidential and parliamentary elections held last April dismissing 122 out of 126 challenges submitted by political parties and presidential candidates.

The deputy chief-justice, Mahgoub al-Amin al-Faki, said in a press conference on Sunday the court received 3 challenges regarding the presidential elections and 123 challenges pertaining to regional and national geographical constituencies.

The Sudanese opposition forces agreed to establish a committee for the protection of Darfuri students in Khartoum. Medical doctors will appoint three clinics in the capital where students from Darfur, injured during attacks by student members of the ruling party, can be treated. Members of the Darfur Bar Association, together with a number of other Sudanese lawyers, are ready to provide legal aid.

The political secretary of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) was detained in Omdurman on Tuesday, together with two members of the Independent Students Congress.

According to a statement of the SCP, Mastour Ahmed and the two student activists were held after participating in a mass activity at Soug Libya in the sister-city of Khartoum.

Ahmed had spoken there about his party’s rejection to recognise the election results, and announced that they would continue their campaign to overthrow the government.

The National Election Commission (NEC) on Monday announced that incumbent President Omar Al Bashir has won the presidential election with 94,5 percent of the votes. Opposition parties, as well as independent candidates in the election, refuse to recognise the outcomes.

The head of the NEC, Dr Mukhtar El Asam, reported at a press conference at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum on Monday that Al Bashir won with 5,252,478 votes of the 6,091,412 votes cast in total.

Las elecciones se celebraron a principios de abril y estuvieron marcadas por el boicot de los principales grupos opositores. Al Bashir, que ha gobernado Sudán desde 1989, podría reforzar su influencia en los principales temas del país.   

Members of the opposition and the civil society have welcomed the statement of the Sudan Troika members, saying that the general election last week does not reflect the will of the Sudanese people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the statement, and summoned the US, UK, and Norwegian ambassadors on Tuesday.

Rebel leader Yasir Arman claims that the poor voter registration forced the National Election Commission (NEC) to use the 2010 electoral register. NEC chairman Mukhtar El Asam announced on Tuesday that the voter turnout reached 42 percent. 

The Sudan Appeal signatories will not recognise the outcome of the election, nor the government that will be based on it.

The allied opposition forces, who signed the Sudan Appeal, a political communiqué calling for regime-change, in December last year, have held meetings with US, European, and African officials. They informed them that the Sudanese ruling party needs to be pressured to accept a transitional government, and a no-fly zone in the war-torn regions of Darfur, South Kordofan, and the Blue Nile.

The head of the National Election Commission NEC), Mukhtar El Asam, announced on Sunday that the number of votes cast in the presidential and parliamentary election reached 4.800 million. 13.8 million Sudanese were eligible to vote.

He predicted that the percentage of the voter turnout will lie between 36 and 38 percent in the end. “It may reach 40 percent”, he said, stressing that the low numbers were expected.
