Intitially called on April 18th, they were subsequently called off, at the same time it was announced that former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika would not run for a fifth mandate, before he formally ressigned on April 3rd as Presdient of Algeria. On April 10th, the new Chief of State, Abdelkader Bensalah, provisionally nominated for a 90-day period, called on presidential elections for July 4th. These polls were subsequently cancelled on June 2nd, after the continuation of massive protests, despite intensive heat and Ramadhan.
