BEIRUT: Beirut MP Michel Pharaon voiced concern Thursday that the country was in a state of paralysis and being held hostage to recurrent security incidents that are shunting any progress.
“The entire country has become a hostage and not just the Turkish pilot and his assistant, the [state] institutions are being held hostage, the Cabinet, Parliament’s activity and the activity of some institutions,” said the MP after meeting Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam.
“The country has become limited to Qusair and Abra and the airport road and the European decision [to blacklist Hezbollah’s military wing] and what is happening in Iran and Syria,” he added.
Pharaon said that the rights of people “are being taken away.”
“People do not just want to survive but to achieve their interests in life and the institutions want to be productive too,” he said.
The lawmaker said that the situation in the country called for a “non-provocative” Cabinet as well as the reactivation of state institutions.
“We are not provoking Hezbollah ... I think it has become necessary to form a Cabinet and discuss a new electoral law and emphasize the work of institutions,” he said.
“We should not feel intimidated by anyone and I think Salam is aware of that, we should a form a Cabinet that does not provoke any group and is able to achieve the aspirations of people,” he added.
