KABUL (PAN): Nearly one million people have so far obtained voter registration cards for the April 5 presidential and provincial council elections as part of the second phase of the campaign, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced on Saturday.

The first phase was launched in May on provincial capital level across the country and the second phase on district and village level commenced on July 27. A total of four million eligible people will be distributed voter cards ahead of the elections.

IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor told Pajhwok Afghan News the nearly one million eligible people who had obtained the cards included more than 700,000 male and 260,000 women. They also included 5,600 Kuchi tribesmen and 1900 tribeswomen, he added.

He said the campaign was going well in the whole of the country except seven districts in Zabul, Helmand, Ghazni and Paktika provinces due to security concerns.
