President's brother steps into electoral battle

KABUL (PAN): Qayyum Karzai, a brother of the incumbent president, joined next year’s presidential race by filing his nomination papers with the Independent Election Commission (IEC) here on Sunday.
Qayyum Karzai was accompanied to the commission by hundreds of supporters including his brother Mahmood Karzai, Minister of Refugees Jamaher Anwari and a numbers of parliamentarians.
Mahmood Karzai, who had previously told Pajhwok Afghan News their family would swing behind his brother, was asked if the president also backed his candidacy.
“I personally back Qayyum, who needs support from all family and people. He will to travel all over the country to win people’s confidence,” Mahmood said, adding the president was popular with nation that was why all people trusted him.
