QUETTA: Although the Election Commission of Balochistan (ECB) had initially set December 10 as the deadline to declare the official results of local bodies polling, the body announced that the complete vote count will be compiled ‘in the next 24 hours’ due to certain delays.

The commission on Wednesday said that the results of 20 districts have been accumulated, and that the Returning Officers (ROs) of the remaining nine are expected to send their results within a day. Earlier, it had delayed the official announcement to December 12, but it appears that this date will be pushed further.

The authority said that compiling the official results of all 29 districts has been challenging and time-consuming. “We have got the results of 20 districts but are waiting for nine,” the province’s election commissioner Sultan Bayazeed told The Express Tribune.

Bayazeed added that ROs from remote areas are likely to send the results in the next 24 hours. “Results cannot be emailed or faxed as we need hardcopies. Most of the ROs have sent the results while nine are likely to send until today [Thursday],” he said.

In response to a question, he said party positions will be clear once the commission issues notifications to the elected councillors. “The results will be sent to Islamabad and then it will issue notifications,” he said.

“We are not in a position to say which party is leading since we are in the first phase of collecting results. After issuing a notification, the EC will be able to tell which party has gained majority of the votes.”

“The schedule for by-elections will be announced in a couple of days,” he added.
