Former Palestinian Authority Chief of Justice Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi announced the formation of a new political party on Saturday.

Sheikh Tamimi told Ma'an that the official launching of the Freedom and Independence Party for the Defense of Holy Sites will take place on Wednesday at the Rocky hotel in Ramallah.

The party, which is licensed by the PA Interior Ministry, aims to protect Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem and Palestinian rights such as the return of refugees, Tamimi said.

The party will work on enhancing political unity and reconciliation, he added, noting that members will be from the West Bank, Gaza and the Palestinian diaspora.

Tamimi said that he will run for presidency of the Palestinian Authority if nominated by President Abbas, but if the president decides to run he will fully support him for the position.

President Mahmoud Abbas announced the end of Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi's career as Palestinian Chief Justice and Supreme Judge in June 2010.
