Somalia’s Minister of National Security has unexpectedly announced his resignation last night on national television, addressing the public on the state-run media network, Somali National TV.

Abdikarim Hussein Guled, the security minister for the Somali Federal Government tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister before officially declaring it to thousands of viewers.

Yesterday, a terrorist attack on the parliament headquarters for the Somali Federal Republic left 3 Members of Parliament wounded and more than 10 others including security forces and civilians. The Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack, in which several of their Islamist militants were killed.

The militants also staged an attack on the Benadir Supreme Court, UNDP compound, presidential palace raid, etc. all within the last year. Countless numbers of people were killed in the explosions, many of them who were government officials. Further attacks include planned assassinations on important officials.

The Minister of National Security, the Minister of Justice & Constitutional Affairs (Farah Sheikh Abdikadir) and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, are all members of the religious political party ‘Damu-jadiid’.

Both Ministers were the only ones not to be replaced when Parliament ousted the previous government, hence they were re-elected by Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed.

Many say that the reason Abdikarim Hussein Guled tendered his resignation is because the President prompted him to in order for Damu-jadid to have a continued presence in the government. The Minister was previously the Minister of Interior and many have reported that they were not pleased with his strategies to secure the capital city.
