The Somali cabinet on Thursday (May 29th) appointed a five-member committee for the Constitution Review and Implementation Commission, eight months after the government called for the establishment of the commission.

Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, who chaired the cabinet meeting, welcomed the appointment of the committee members, who he said are all knowledgeable about the constitution.

"We have taken a big step towards forming a government, and the cabinet succeeded today in approving the constitution review commission. I thank the sub-committee of politics and the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs for playing a big role in establishing the committee," Ahmed said.

The committee members are Asho Geelle Diriye, Hassan Omar Mahad-Alle, Osman Jama Ali, Mohamed Abdalla Salah and Hassan Hussein Haji.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir Mohamed said his ministry has been working hard on establishing the independent committee and thanked the cabinet for unanimously approving it.

The cabinet also discussed the country's security situation, and ordered the security sub-committee to prepare a plan within 24 hours on how fast track Mogadishu's security and review the work of Ministry of National Security.
